Is the usb just for firmware updates or can it be connected to a DAW?

You can download Tonelib Zoom which is software that you can use to update as well as adjust patches and download patches so not just for updates

Is this suitable for use with keyboards?

I think this could be used with keyboards if care is taken selecting an apt lead between keyboard and pedal (Some keyboards have a stereo output, the pedal input is mono).

Can it be used as a volume pedal?

Yes it can, if you deactivate all other effects on a particular patch and just select the Pedal Volume effect.

Can you bypass the pedal by pressing down both foot switches (ie in tuner mode)???

No, that cuts the through signal.
