Red Wing Shoes Heritage Iron Ranger Men Boot

Day1: Delivery Shoes delivered by amazon, got them at $242 (old nitrile sole not vibram) so I was extremely happy. The moment I opened the box I was complete wowed of how good they looked and felt. I had done my research including watching almost all IR videos on YouTube and reading all reviews here. Like everyone I went full size down. I normally wear 9.5D on nikes so got 8.5D on these but right of the box they felt extremely tight. Day 2: Oiling So even though they looked pre-oiled I grabbed the red wing mink oil and generously oiled them and let them sit for an hour. The oil did darken them a bit but not too much (see the before and after pics attached). I wore thick wool socks and walked around the house for 30 mins but it was painful so couldn’t take it anymore. They were too tight, felt like I should have gone for 8.5EE instead. Day3: Wear them to office I tried them in the morning with regular socks and was surprised that they felt much more comfortable this time so I decided to wear them to office (desk job). Now here I am, almost 3 hours later and they are comfortable enough that I don’t notice that I am wearing them. No pain no tightness but the sole does feel little hard while walking so hoping that get better. All in all I am very happy with my purchase. They look great, they scream quality and they feel durable but still i find them little pricey at their full price but for $242 I think they are a good buy. Looking forward how they feel next week, will post the updates here. Edited:**** Month 2 : Love love love Its been over 2 months since i got them and I have been wearing them to office almost everyday. They look superb and extremely comfortable now. I love how well the leather feels, keep touching them every so often while at work. I have oiled them twice by combining red wing mink oil and their heritage leather cream. It darkes the shoes for couple days but they go back to original color away after few days.

First, I heavily researched a pair of new boots tirelessly for months. My primary goals for the boots I wanted were to be leather, hard wearing, but also be able to be worn with semi-dress clothes as I work in an office environment. I also wanted to be able to wear them outdoors to do light work or in my garage-shop. They needed to be a very versatile and good looking boot. After trying these on at the store and seeing the price I was a bit skeptical if these Iron Rangers would meet all my needs. I was also skeptical since there was a lot of hype on-line over these boots. I needed to find out if it was in fact hype. After having these boots for a bit IMO it was NOT hype. Sizing - I normally wear a size 11 shoe and when I tried them on in the store a 9.5 or 10 seemed to fit okay. The lady at the shoe store told me to go with the 9.5 which I ended up doing, but then after wearing them around the house for a bit I returned them as they were too tight on my toes. I looked on amazon and found a much better price so I got the size 10, one size down. Second, these are real men's leather boots. I saw a lot of comments on how hard they were to break in. Don't expect them to be fully comfy out of the box or wear like a sneaker. Set your expectations that these are leather boots with a goodyear welt construction. They did require break in but I wouldn't say they were super hard to get broken in. My method for break in - I wore them about 2-3 times a week for 3-4 weeks and they are fully broken in and surprisingly comfortable. I treated mine with Dr. Martens wonder balsam that I had left from an old pair of Docs once a week during the break in period. That really worked wonders and softened up the leather nicely for the break in period. Third, these are American made so what more do you need to know. I've started being more conscious of where my goods are made. If you look at most shoes out there they are made in China or another foreign country. It's a good feeling knowing that you're wearing something quality that is also supporting the American economy and the workers. Also, keep in mind that you can send these in to get re-soled when they are worn out. That's a huge benefit when you consider the price and how comfy they will be by the time they need a new sole. All in all - I have a few pairs of other boots of varying materials and I find myself reaching for these more than any others. Out of all the boots I have they aren't the most comfortable, but they look great for office work or just wearing around town casually. The more I wear them the more comfortable they do become. I am very happy with these boots and really look forward to wearing them. I'm half tempted to get another pair in a different color - maybe after I've worn these for a few years. Highly recommend!

I'm going to break my review into separate parts so that it's much more easy to read, and some people (like me) only care about certain parts in a review. Background: Originally, I had a pair of Clarke Desert Boots that I had worn for almost 6 years. I hadn't taken very good care of them so, while they had character, they were falling apart. I was going to just get another pair, but for years I had wanted a nice pair of Red Wings, so I decided on these. Fit: The most common question on these I've seen. I wear a 10.5 US in Nike's and an 8.5 US Wide in my now destroyed Clarke's. I had gotten a 9.5 US Wide in Iron Rangers originally, but I had slight heel slip and a little too much toe space. I exchanged them for a 9 US Wide and they fit perfectly. I no longer have heel slip, it's tight inside but to where the leather will conform to my foot, and I have just the right amount of toe space. I recommend going to an actual Red Wing store if you can to be sized. While the half size to full size down tip is pretty much true, everyone wears their shoes differently. Look and Build Quality: While looks are subjective, in my honest opinion, these look fantastic. Very minimalist looking, not really flashy, but the subtle high quality stitching and eyelet accenting makes the boot stand out. The very first time I wore these I received a compliment from a total stranger. These look good enough to wear in a semi-formal setting, or just out and about town. The build quality is also very good. Just pulling these out of the box and examining them, you get an idea of how much time and precision was put into making these. The stitching is very well done and consistent, the spacing on the cuts is precise, yada yada. Red Wing knows what they're doing. Comfort: These are going to be uncomfortable for a while, according to everyone ever. For me, it's not too bad, but I wear boots all the time, and my feet are used to being abused. If this is your first boot ever, it is going to be a bad experience until they break in. That said, any high quality leather boot is going to be like that. It just takes time for that new, hard leather to break in. Once it does, leather boots feel great, even compared to sneakers. Anything bad I can think about: The speed laces. These things are flimsy and honestly should just be eyelets instead. You'll probably crush these fiddling around with them, but you can easily bend them back in place. Not a big deal, but still. Eventually I'll have these popped out and replaced with ACTUAL eyelets. The stock laces they give you are pretty average. Most people just take them off and replace them with Redwing's Leather Laces, which I've done as well. I highly recommend you do it too.

I have been wanting some Iron Rangers ever since I saw my friend’s pair in amber harness. I fell in love with the copper rough and tough color myself, and bought these as a promotion present to myself. The quality is as you would expect from Red Wing. I expect these boots to last me 20 years. They are a little heavy, and one toe perhaps got a little more oil than the other at the factory, but I know that will go away with wear eventually, and tbh, I kinda like it, it gives it a little character/patina from the start. Normally I’m a size 10.5 sneaker so I am usually a size 10 boot, however when I went to my local Red Wing store, the 10 seemed a little too big and they didn’t have a 9.5 in stock to try on. I took a chance and ordered 9.5 and it’s literally a PERFECT fit. I was surprised at how perfect it was, and idk if it’s the rough and tough leather or what, but the break in was incredibly short — nowhere near what other reviews say or even my own friend’s experience. After a day or two, the leather was soft and they were comfy enough to wear all day with no problems. Well worth the price. They are easily my favorite and most stylish boots — the color really pops and they look great with my selvedge denim. Iron Rangers should be in every guy’s wardrobe, they will never go out of style and will last you forever if you take care of them.

I've owned numerous pair of work and combat boots over the years and these rate near the top. First, let me talk about sizing. I've seen videos and read articles that suggest one goes down a full size or more. While I know leather stretches over time, the thought of breaking in something smaller than the 10.5's (normal size for me) I got gives me a tizzy. These are murder when you first wear them. They are supper stiff and after a few weeks of fairly frequent wear, they are still a long way from what I think of as broken in. I'll put them on with a sweat sock and and initially, they are pretty tight and unyielding. After a few hours they stretch out some and get a lot more comfortable. I'll store them with shoe stretchers inside and still they are tight when I first put them on. I'm sure they will get better over time but break in is going to be a fairly long process. Style: It's a work boot. I wouldn't wear them with a suit but fortunately I have a job wear casual is the order of the day. These are not cold weather boots by any stretch. It's snowing here in Denver right now and I wore them out to sweep of the drive. Almost immediately you can feel the cold start to seep in. I put a think insole in the boot, to help with comfort because while the leather foot bed is supposed to conform to your foot over time, it's way more uncomfortable than I care for. Nonetheless, the insole helps keep some of the cold out but like I said, this is not a winter boot. I will say though, the soles grip really well in the snow. I didn't have any issues walking about and not falling down. Cost: Yes, these are crazy expensive, in my opinion, but I think they will be well worth the price over the long run. I've got two pairs of work boots from years ago and they were both over a $100 which, at the time, was a nutty price to pay for shoes. But those boots have lasted me literally for 20+ years. I just had one pair re-soled and they are still going strong. I fully expect these to be cut from the same cloth. I'm not normally a fan boy about things like shoes but I like these so much I actually bought another pair so I can rotate them out during the week. Considering that these will probably be the last work boots I buy, ever (I'm almost 60 years old) I think the value will out weigh the cost. The only thing I didn't like were the stock laces. In my opinion they were way to short so I replaced them with something similar but longer (not sure how long, they were a pair I had laying around). Overall, I don't think you can go wrong getting these as long as you aren't planning on doing any winter hiking.

I bought these boots as a gift to myself for Christmas. I wanted a boot that I could wear anywhere, anytime, in any situation. Some would say the wolverine 1000 mile can be dressier, and they may, but they are no where near as tough as these. They have a leather sole, and mold to your foot, do not expect these to be comfortable immediately. People often complain about the break in period, and how stiff the leather is, but its supposed to be! These are tough boots, the leather is very soft, but will need some time to break in. You should wear thicker socks with these, I wear a thin liner and a thick wool sock. I never once had issues with comfort. The boots molded to my feet within weeks. Ive put a couple hundred miles on these hiking upstate NY, walking NYC, Boston, and most of the North East spots. I wore these through a north east winter, spring, and am now starting on summer. They still feel great. Sizing: I'm an 11 in nike, 10.5 in nearly all else. I have wide feet and size up to make shoes fit. I wear a 9 EE in these, and they are a little snug, but after a few months the leather has stretched to fit my wide feet. A rule of thumb would be to wear half a size down. Be careful of the toe box, the leather is quite soft and can scratch easy. These look better with age, but if you brush them often they will stay looking new. I would NOT oil these too much, as it will over soften the leather, and make them very very dark. Oil every couple months, brush off mud and dirt, and use cedar shoe inserts. These will last a lifetime. **UPDATE** 07DEC15 After nearly two years of wear, travel around the world, and over 1000 miles of walking/hiking, probably closer to 2000, these boots are still phenomenal. The sole has completely molded to my foot, I can wear with thin socks and not tear my feet up. I still recommend wearing thick socks. These boots have been across Europe, Asia, and the USA. Seen rain, snow, and all other forms of weather. I've worn out Jeans, and shirts, and these bad boys have lasted. I recommend regular cleaning, not oiling too much, they get ridiculously dark. Had I known how dark they would get I would have bought the other style of brown. These are NOT waterproof, but with oiling they get water resistant. I HIGHLY recommend using wood boot tree especially after getting wet. Check the new photos for how they wear

Very nice boots with typical QC problems. I knew I was a size 8 and they fit well. The sanding on the sole edges looked unfinished and rough. The leather welt where it meets the heel rand was not cut even. Remidied with sandpaper and a razor blade. Oh, one of the speed hooks was super sharp and I had to use a small file to keep it from shedding laces. I also added kilties and some older laces I had laying around to change the look. Overall, very satisfied for them being on sale. Would buy again!

Best pair of boots I have ever had! Not only do they look super good they are very comfortable, durable and they provide plenty of support. Pair these babies up with some raw denim and you're good to go! Two complaints; the laces that come with it are too short and I couldn't tie the top speed lace and they run really big!. Order one whole size smaller on the length and I ordered a pair of leather boot laces from Red Wing trimmed to size and I'm good to go! I'm sure these boots will last me 10 years as I don't wear them every day (neither should you, allow about a day for them to air out or get some shoe trees. They are built with all natural materials and will rot if they are moist for too long). If they get minor scuffs just rub some boot oil on them and they are like brand new. I can't wait for these to wear just right and look like I've had them for years. SIZING: All my other shoes are sizes 8.5-10.5 Depending on brand, I've been wearing Red Wing work boots at my job for almost 10 years and they run 8.5EE - 9D depending on if they have a liner or not. The first pair of Iron Rangers I had to return because they were too big I ordered size 8D, they pinched my foot and were too long. The pair I replaced them with are size 7.5EE and they fit perfectly. COMFORT: These shoes are made with all natural materials and will shape themselves to your foot. That means that there is a break in period and it may be a couple wears or a few weeks. I wore some thicker socks and rubbed them with boot oil and they were good to go after a couple of days. WIDTH: These boots are narrow so make sure you get the correct width it makes all the difference in the world. ARCH SUPPORT: What arch support? These boots do not have an insole like a work boot or other type of shoe (google goodyear welt). I have really high arches and this has not been a problem. I love these boots!

These are great boots overall — well made, comfortable after break-in, and the design and craftsmanship are what you’d expect at this price point. However, after wearing them for a few weeks and properly breaking them in, I noticed something wasn’t right. The left boot’s side leather is significantly softer and thinner than the right boot. After checking more closely, the difference in leather thickness is obvious, which affects support and structure on one side. This isn’t something that was noticeable when new and only became clear after normal wear. Unfortunately, due to this manufacturing inconsistency, I had to return the boots. I’ve taken photos to clearly show the difference and attached them to this review. It’s a shame because they are otherwise excellent boots, but consistency at this level really matters.

From the moment you take them out of the box, the quality and attention to detail is obvious. I have received multiple compliments on them while standing around at the pub. They simply look outstanding. I also love the smell of new leather and they have that in spades. These are likely the best made boots I own. Sizing was my biggest concern before they arrived. They are comfortable but take a bit to break in properly. That being said, I've had no issues. I did not try the boots on before ordering but instead spent hours scouring reviews to determine the best size. My original intent was to size down by 1/2, per many reviews and recommendations, but then my actual sized boot dropped dramatically in price so I ordered those. I've never worn Red Wings before but I have worn boots my entire life. I typically wear size 10 UK but I have a similar pair of Grenson boots that are 9.5 and a Frye lace-up that is 10.5. I went with 10 for the Red Wing. It fits my right foot perfectly but is a little large on my left. I wear thick Smart Wool socks and I wear a thin liner sock on my left and have had no issues. I've been wearing them for two weeks now and will often walk to the market and back, about 5 kilometres. They are a tad narrow but are long and my left boot has 3/4 inch spare room at the toe. I bought some inexpensive leather inserts for both, which seems to have helped. No foot pain, no complaints. They are comfortable, look great, and make me feel like a man - a real man with hair on his chest, a deep voice, and who doesn't get the hiccups when eating spicy food. Yeah, I feel like that man. You can too. Probably.

I bought these boots because after breaking my ankle my physio suggest boots for additional support above the ankle etc.. The quality of the Iron Ranger is extraordinary. They are so well made that out the box my fingers could feel the solidity and made my feet panic. Putting them on for the first time was rather like wrapping my feet in concrete. I'd guess at two-hours wear around the house each day, they could take between a week to ten days to break-in. They are *that* solid. The leather is thick, heavy and well-oiled. The insole is a thick and hard slab of veg-tanned leather which has no cushioning whatsoever and slowly moulds to your feet with wear and warmth. In time the boot becomes even more comfortable that it is after the uppers break-in. You have to break the boot in twice - inside and outside. Once done, the comfort is amazing. Sizing - Keep it simple. Whatever size you are in trainers/sneakers - go half a size down on that. Colour - One thing to note: the different colours are also different *leathers* - not just different colours of the same thing. The 'black harness' leather is completely different to the 'black prarie' leather on their Blacksmith boot. Also, boot-oil and oil-basd products will change the colour. One assumes that the boots you get have something to do with the colour you like. If you put the wrong product on them they will darken. Redwing's own 'leather cream', however, does NOT darken leather.
