Q: I have 12' ceilings with optical detectors. I have a reach of 7'9". Would I need a step ladder or would the sabre set off the detector.

The sabre is 330mm (13") long fully extended. You would need to get the end of the sabre within 6" of the detector otherwise you will probably need to discharge quite a bit of smoke to get it to travel toward the detector. I have 9' ceilings and it works for me standing on the floor. I am 6' 3" so that helps. The can is quite small. I found the pictures deceiving. It works well though.

Q: How long does it last,i.e. how many tests?

I’ve tested six smoke alarms with this and plenty of it leftover .it depends on how long you keep the trigger down when testing smoke alarm.i use a quick tap single bursts for each smoke alarm.

Q: Can it be used on both battery and mains operated fire alarms?

www.smokesabre.com and the instructions on the container do not say anything about the types of alarm on which the tester can be used. I assume this means it can be used on both battery and mains. I use mine on mains operated alarm system
