I received four key rings, two large and two small. The "two piece" means that it separates into two halves when you pull the barrel connector apart. I hope this helps.

How many retaining balls are in the female barrel portion. Some have 1, others 3. More is better...

I never thought to look. Knowing it works and holds snuggly was enough. But to answer your question, there are 3 ball bearings.

Need an improvement

At first I wanted to set 3 stars - key chain was too easy to separate with a bit of a force. I had a strip of 0.055mm thin metal strip, which I cut and put under the mechanism and now it works ideally. So since I was able to fix it i would rate it with 4, but don't recommend to buy by other people.
