For more than fifteen years Police Lieutenant Kinderman (George C. Scott) has been haunted by the death of his friend Father Damien Karras. Now, on the 15th anniversary of the exorcism that claimed the priest’s life, Kinderman’s world is once again shattered when a boy is found decapitated and savagely crucified. It’s just the beginning of a nightmare series of bizarre religious murders. The brutal murders bear the hallmarks of the infamous Gemini Killer…who died in the electric chair fifteen years earlier. But when a psychopath claiming to be the Gemini Killer reveals intimate, gruesome details that only the true killer could possibly know, Kinderman is confronted with a horrifying truth that he cannot explain…and that will shake him to the core. The Exorcist III is author/filmmaker William Peter Blatty’s personal vision of what followed after The Exorcist. Like the original, The Exorcist III combines elements of a detective story, a theological puzzle, and an unforgettable study in terror. Review: It's a wonderfull life....... - If you've seen the film you will know why I put two L's in wonderfull...... I have owned The Exorcist III on many formats, from VHS to DVD, then the Scream! Factory Blu-ray, the French ESC Blu-ray and now the Arrow Video Blu-ray. Obviously the VHS and DVD versions were inferior in terms of picture quality and audio so then the Blu-ray versions.... The French ESC version had a nice box, both cuts of the film and some exclusive extras. The extras were in French so not much good to me! The Scream! Factory version had some fantastic extras, both cuts and a slightly better picture but was Region A locked and when my multi-region player died I was lost! Thank Legion for Arrow Video! All the extras from Shout!, both cuts of the film AND a couple of exclusive extras! Perfect! Would have liked a Steelbook but maybe later! Fingers and oars crossed 😉 The film is very special to me because it's one of the only films that can still scare me after all these years and thousands of horror films later! The mix of religion and innocence being totally destroyed and the amazing build up of tension throughout really makes for a terrifying film. Even in the lesser theatrical cut. The real gem here is always going to be the Legion cut because of how drastically different it is from the theatrical cut. I will not spoil it but the Legion cut is the best version of The Exorcist III and it is very, very different. For full disclosure, as they say, the Legion cut is made up of the best available elements so the quality and aspect ratio do change in some new scenes but for purists, it's essential. The Arrow Video release has 2 discs and contains many extras.... Disc 1; The Theatrical Cut. A new 2K restoration of The Exorcist III in 1080p. New Audio Commentary . Audio interview with director William Peter Blatty. A 5 part documentary. Vintage interviews with cast and crew. More interviews. Deleted scenes, outtakes and bloopers. Image galleries. Trailers and TV spots. Disc 2; The "Legion" Director's Cut. Presented in 1080p. New Audio Commentary with Mark Kermode and Kim Newman (worth the purchase alone!) Deleted prologue with commentary from Mark Kermode and Kim Newman. It may not look like much written down like this but for a fan it's a great package. Both cuts are presented in 2.0 or 5.1 audio in 1.85:1 aspect ratio and English subtitles. This release is Region B LOCKED. Review: Very good - Very good. Item as described.

GREAT RELEASE, PITY ABOUT THE FILM
The only true sequel to the original 1973 classic sees William Peter Blatty this time in the director's chair. Unfortunately his one vision take on his own story, apparently with very little compromise on set, resulted in a movie that left studio bosses scratching their heads and then attacking the finished product first with scissors and then re-shoots. It's a pity, because the first 3/4 is terrific stuff. Scary, some great set pieces and that eerie quality throughout that makes everything look a little wrong and slightly worrying. George C. Scott is on top form as Lt. Kinderman (Lee J. Cobb in the original), with superb performances from Ed Flanders as Father Dyer and Brad Dourif as the Gemini killer. Jason Miller returns to 'share' the character with Dourif, and is listed in the credits just as Patient X. There are some stand-out moments, notably the Heaven sequence, the attack on Kinderman's daughter and THAT chilling hospital scene which must rank as an all time screamer. The vision and execution of these scenes are things we haven't really seen before. So far, so good, but the film has nowhere to go. The 'killer' is already incarcerated in a cell with manacles and a straitjacket, so there's not a lot left to do except dispatch him....somehow! This is the film's main problem. What may read well on the page doesn't necessarily transfer to the screen in a satisfactory manner. Blatty's objective was to turn the book into film, allowing nothing to get in the way. Once studio execs saw the finished product, unease set in and we then get the addition of a pointless exorcism conducted by Nicol Williamson as Father Morning, whose presence is totally unnecessary. His sudden appearance in the hospital corridor wearing full cassock and bible in hand is a rather far fetched addition. It's here that the film goes downhill and resembles a cheap effects laden horror movie. Even after this episode, the climax between Kinderman and the Demon falls rather flat, and the whole thing ends very abruptly leaving the audience wondering just what might have been. The Blu-ray release from Arrow is tremendous with a fantastic picture that is crisp, clean, very bright with rich colours. I remember the original VHS tape which looked appalling and substandard until replaced by DVD. Now, as is usually the case with Arrow, there's a wealth of extras to enjoy. Documentaries both new and vintage, on-set talks, a film length audio interview with Blatty, trailers and commentaries. Not forgetting a booklet detailing the production. Overall a great package. The main extra and the one big talking point is the inclusion on disc 2 of Blatty's original cut 'Legion', which he intended as the finished release. Again, another missed and confusing opportunity. This itself has a deleted scene with Brad Dourif playing Father Karras, which would have gone some way to explaining Kinderman's reaction upon recognising the killer as the priest. Fans of the original Exorcist movie and those who have already seen the theatrical cut just go, What? Dourif's performance here is stunning, and would surely have been worth Academy Award consideration. He hugs both screen and dialogue with lengthy monologues which whilst mesmerising are not the sort of developments to hold a modern audience's attention. The setting is also more bleak and believable. A damp brick lined cell that you can almost smell from the screen. It should be mentioned that Jason Miller is totally absent from this version which seems more appropriate considering his fate in the original. Ultimately, the climax in this director's cut is just as dull and just as flat. Without that exorcism it's a case of waiting for Kinderman to deliver the final blow, in the form of a gunshot. What also doesn't help is the quality of the re-inserted scenes. A very poor video image, blurred and washed out that makes the whole experience even worse. So finally, the cinema release is the better option, with Blatty's preferred cut emphasising the need for flexibility in story and structure whilst still pleasing fans of the novel. The film as a whole is still a minor classic, but with too many missed opportunities.

The Exorcist III – Film Review (1990)
OVERVIEW This is the review of The Exorcist III Shout! Factory’s Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray PLOT The plot is set 15 years after the original movie The Exorcist and is set around two three key people from the original movies Lt Kinderman, Father Dyer and Father Karras and a another “The Gemini Killer” who was put in the electric chair the same night Karras fell to his death saving a young girl from possession. The overall tone that Blatty sets is very different from the original. It is at times highly subversive and it plays very much like a supernatural thriller in terms of making the audience question many aspects of belief that a tied into the situational aspects of the plot which link both movies and it’s characters. PICTURE The picture compared to my old Warner Bros DVD Anthology release and the Warner Bros Blu-ray is a stunning 2k restoration by Shout! Factory with vibrant flesh tones expanding on the details which are particular resonant in the dream sequence and cell scenes with deep colour saturation and limited grain. AUDIO The audio is clear and crisp with good dynamic range it has also been given an upgrade with a DTS HD audio in both 2.0 and 5.1 surround sound I choose the downmix and was very impressed by its range, depth and clarity. CONCLUSION Underrated is what I think of The Exorcist III and at times rather deep and philosophical, dramatic and haunting it is a beautifully shot movie with a clever plot, stellar performances and real lingering sense of tension and suspense. Highly recommended Paul Isaacs 2017

I truly enjoy this movie. George C. Scott is an absolute powerhouse, truly one of America's finest actors. He is complemented by an incredible supporting cast, and a director who knew exactly what it was he wanted to do and how he was going to do it. William Blatty made one of the finest supernatural whodunit films as a sequel to The Exorcist, based off his own novel "Legion" (which itself is well worth a read or three). This movie is at turns hilarious, touching, intensely sad and absolutely terrifying. Brad Dourif gives a lunatic performance that really only he could pull off. There's also a nifty extended cut that uses footage from the dailies in varying qualities. It can be pretty jarring, but it fleshes out the film a bit. Understandable if it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was cool.
