Review: brilliantly singable and lots of fun - This is a great film and would highly recommend to anyone who loves musicals like Mamma Mos and the like. The four young leads are amazing with Antonia Thomas and Freya Mavor doing brilliant jobs in both the singing and acting stakes. The boys, George MacKay and Kevin Guthrie also do great jobs able supported by pros like Peter Mullen, Jane Horrocks and Jason Flemyng. Dexter Fletcher does brilliantly well directing and has a little fun cameo as do the Proclaimers. Talking of the Proclaimers, I had heard some of their stuff before but was by no means a huge fan, but the music in this film was exceptional and the Proclaimers songs we know and live have been a good old tweak. The songs are ably supported by Paul Englishby' s score which just completes what was such a happy movie experience for me the only weakness on this blog Ray is the slightly disappointing special features. Review: A rare ray of Scottish sunshine - Personally, this film was my favorite of 2013. I saw it on accident. I meant to see Thor2 but it was sold out so I went to this instead despite having never heard of it before and not knowing what I was in for, and I am not sorry one bit it turned out that way. I am not that familiar with the music of the Proclaimers outside of "I'm gonna be (500 miles)". The real test of a jukebox miracle (a very hit or miss genre, see Once (hit) vs. Viva Forever! (miss)) is whether or not an audience member who is not familiar with the source music feels the songs flow organically and were written for the script. This was absolutely the case with Sunshine on Leith. Every song fits the story so well you can't imagine how they were ever treated as separate pieces. The cast does an amazing job. Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks give amazing performances that will not be forgotten. You can't help falling in love with Antonia Thomas as Davy is. And, while I am not that familiar with the bulk of Jason Flemyng's work, seeing a guy I generally think of as a British gangster-killing Irish Traveler playing an art curator doing a dance number through the Scottish National Gallery is a scene I will always treasure. I have already made several friends watch this film and they have all loved it.
