There is a battery included. Once inserting the battery it looks like the pet is breathing as the back moves up and down.

Can you move the dogs appendages?

No, you cannot move the dog's appendages. This dog has a metal based to hold the batteries which are needed to make the dog appear to be breathing. So, it is not something that you would want to cuddle. It is cute and a nice conversation piece.
