I would say for outside use it's possible for bugs to get in though especially ones like ants. **Q: Is this able to be painted?** A: I would think so. It is shiny so you would probably do well to sand it first so paint would stick better. **Q: The (customer) photo on the box shows the knob on top while the Amazon photo shows the knob on the botto. Can the breadbox be used in either position?** A: I have been using it with the knob on the bottom like the picture but when I looked at it just now and turned it over the "top" was not flat and looked more like a top. I had thought that the box opening from the bottom was a bit inconvenient. Now it works much better. To answer the question....I think it is made to have the knob on the top.
