Fortunately I saw a previous review which mentioned that they had received a communication after purchase about putting these in the oven for 15 minutes before using as there was an initial smoking problem. I had the same communication which I have copied below so anyone ordering will be aware beforehand. My oven did smoke when I first put them in on their own but to be honest I'm not sure if that was the mats or the residue of fat splashing from my roast dinner the day before!! :-) There has been no smoke since and they have worked well. One of these tore when washing after only a handful of uses. They also stain very quickly if you are cooking something fatty and it smokes. Good cooking results, though, and I now use the remaining one whenever I'm grilling! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very smart and useful but cleaning can be a bit of a chore *by M***R on 23 April 2017* This is an extremely useful heat mat. I’d never seen something like this before. I mainly use it for putting hot things such as saucepans on top. I was initially very disappointed as I thought I’d only received one but it turns out that you just need to peal them apart!There are two sides - one that traps heat underneath and keeps food warmer and one side that allows heat to dissipate through the gaps really quickly. It’s a really smart idea. I was quite pleasantly surprised by how strong these are. You press your weight down onto the mat and the spike would still stay strong. Pretty impressive.The reason I dropped a star is because it’s very difficult to clean due to the gaps. It is dishwasher safe but it takes up a lot of room in the dishwasher and simply putting it in flat against the walls of the dishwasher wouldn’t clean it properly, I imagine. I think the easiest way is to drizzle soap water on top and leave it overnight.That’s why I mainly use it for just putting hot stuff on top - I don’t want to have to clean it! I otherwise did have a go at baking some oven chips and fish on this and all the oil got drained out perfectly, which is fantastic. Other than the cleaning effort, I think this is a really innovative and useful product.
