We discovered Owl Babies during a family owl experience, where the story was read just before the children met three real baby owls and their mother; just like in the book! We hadn’t heard it before, but the kids were instantly hooked. It’s a sweet, gentle story with beautiful illustrations, and it’s already become a new favourite at bedtime. A lovely book we’re so happy to have added to our collection.

Love this book

I love this book. I bought it to read to my son at bedtime. I bought it because I remember a teacher reading it to my class in my first year of school and remember loving the story and wanted to share it with my son. I wasn't traumatised by the Owl Mother's disappearance or even Percy's concern at one point in the story that a fox 'got' their Owl Mother which other reviewers have mentioned, but liked the happy ending. My son is only 4 months old, but I wanted to get into the routine of bedtime reading early, and he seems to listen and looks at the pictures. It's one that we'll keep and continue to read in the coming years as he gets older. The illustrations are lovely and it's a nice story for 'doing voices' when reading aloud to children - the baby owls Sarah, Percy and Bill all comment in turn on each page and it's nice to do a different voice for each of the baby owls. I also like the repetition of Bill's 'I want my Mummy' throughout the story, which becomes 'I love my Mummy' at the end when the Owl Mother returns to the baby owls. It makes the story memorable for children, and older children might enjoy joining in and reading Bill's line. A lovely bedtime story for young children.

I loved this book as I read it to my son when he was young. He’s 30 now! Bought it for a friend’s daughter’s new baby due to arrive in November 25. My only disappointment was that it was a board book and looked nothing like the glossy hardback book I had bought back in 1996. It’s also smaller but as a story it’s lovely.
