The A-Z of Judo

By far the best Judo book on the market. An absolute need for grading at every level. This is my second copy as the first was lost when I lent it to someone! Good description and explanation with English and Japanese terminology used.

This book is really well written and fantastic as a technical reference. The pictures are carefully selected and easily convey the techniques used. My only critique and it's not really a critique, I would have liked a description on breakfalling like he did with throwing, locks, holds and chokes.

my son loved it! I put 4 starts because the photos are black and white.

This book does what it says on the tin, basically covers and lists all the judo moves including many moves now banned for competition. Although not so useful for teaching or explaining how the moves could be used, instead the book works as checklist for everything you could or should know in judo.

Fabulous out of print book which is a real gem for any aspiring judoka, my own Sensei had worked with Syd some years before his passing and spoke highly of him.

If you are serious about Judo this is a great book to help you on the journey. I have just used it to assist me in my Technical Dan Grading. It would be good to get together with other to bring this book right up to date.

I own maybe 7-8 books on Judo. This is easily my favorite. The holds and throws are nicely categorized, along with the source from which the move was taken. Also, the book explicitly states which moves are a part of the art of Judo, though banned in competition.

This is the most interesting Judo book I have ever read. Sensei Hoare has put together a truly unique and very informative addition to what has become a bit of an overcrowded market.

This is a good reference guide as a list of the main movements. It isn't a detailed guide on how to perform them

Sadly, I believe that this wonderful book is now out-of-print. I say "Sadly" because the book is very accessible - the techniques are alphabetized (within their respective sections), and are fairly well explained by the late Syd Hoare, and very well illustrated with photos by renowned Judo photographer, David Finch. One of the reasons that Hoare said he wrote this book was to provide people who are seeking to progress through the judo ranks with a comprehensive and easy-to-access list (I am paraphrasing here) of all of the techniques necessary and relevant for this progress. In my opinion, Hoare has certainly accomplished this.

This is a good reference book if you are trying to find the names of some more common techniques. Since there are so many variations of throws in Judo and JuJitsu, I use this book refresh my memory before, during and after class. But be warned, it does not take you step by step through each technique, but gives an overview of techniques from different schools of Judo. If you are trying to learn step by step techniques for throws, I would recommend the Kodokan - Throwing techniques (Daigo) and the Kodokan Judo book by (Kano). If you trying to learn grappling(Katame Waza) then you can't beat most of the Gracie and Machado books. There are lots of good grappling books available now.

This is a must have for anyone practising Judo! There is a lot of great information and the image quality is certainly better than some of the grainy photos in the Kodokan

Essential book for any Judoka to serve as a reference manual for techniques. Doesn't go into finer details on any technique, just enumerates/lists all the main techniques of Kodokan and Kosen Judo. Its broken down into the following categories: Tachi Waza (Standing/Throwing techniques), Osae Komi Waza (Pinning techniques), Shime Waza (Choking/strangulation techniques), Kansetsu Waza (Joint-locking techniques).
