Super Mario Maker

Although I own a few great games on the Wii U, this is the first that has kept me coming back to it day after day. Super Mario Maker is essentially split into two parts: building levels with the (excellent) level editor and playing levels made by both Nintendo developers and the whole of the Wii U community. Building levels is very straightforward. When you first launch the game you are presented with a fun tutorial which takes the form of finishing off an incomplete level. Afterwards you have access to only the basic level components with which to start building but trust me this is enough to begin with. During the course of playing with the level editor and experiencing other players' levels, you unlock more and more features including time limits on the levels, auto scrolling levels, new themes/skins and the ability to add sub levels. All in all I like this approach as it means that it never becomes too daunting to try making different levels, from haunted mansions to underwater castles everything feels intuitive. Also it is fun to experiment! Try shaking items as you stick them in your levels to see how they transform or make your thwomps huge with a mushroom. As for playing levels, the game comes with a good number pre installed in the form of the 10 Mario challenge. Otherwise you can play any level made my anyone in the community through course world. Here you have access to the 100 Mario challenge where you get 100 lives to complete a set number of courses. And you actually want to complete these challenges because you unlock new goodies each time you do! A word of warning though, start on easy for this. Having dipped my toes into the "expert" levels I have realised that there is no way I am ready for them: the community makes hard levels!! All in all I would highly recommend this game and feel it is a must for any Wii u owner. The game is fun, can be a challenge and has huge replayability value. Also note that the standard edition comes with the hardcover art book which is a lot of fun to look at by itself.

What a brilliant idea. The perfect way to bring back the memories of playing Mario games as i was growing up. Building versions of old classics and completely new idea's. My Son (4) loves this game even more than actually playing the normal games. If we let him he would sit for hours adding platforms. blocks and baddies for me to try to complete. There are a few small issues i have that stop me giving it 5 stars Toolbox. When you start the the game you have a fairly limited selection of items to build levels with. These are added to as you build more levels with new deliveries on a slow but regular progression. Unfortunately, these deliveries are limited to the user logged in. So even though my son has earned a bunch of new stuff, when I'm logged in I can't access this. I understand the reason for not just dumping everything on the user at once but maybe slightly quicker progression would be nice. All in all, this is a fantastic game and a must for wii u owners

I've been playing Super Mario since I was only 3 years old (19 as of this review); growing up with games such as Super Mario World and the legendary Super Mario 64! This game (as you can tell by the title) is a level creating game that allows the player to create Mario levels in the style and gameplay of the first Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U. I'm not much of a creative person, but that's ok! If you're not the creative type either, you can play others peoples levels that will either amazing you with their creativity or make you pull your hair out with their chaotic levels of impossibility! If you love Mario, using your imagine to craft levels or both, I would highly recommend this game for your Wii U system!

Super Mario maker is one of those games where the possibilities are endless. Being an experienced Mario player, it is great to see all your favourite items and obstacles throughout the evolution of Mario. The game itself is brilliantly designed with clear instructions and tutorials to get you started. The create option is amazing it is easy and fun to use allowing for all different amiibo support. However in order to unlock all the items you need to play create mode every day for 9 days for at least 5 minutes, this can get frustrating for experienced players, but it helps to slowly involve new players. The course world is just as good with a wide variety of levels fantastically designed by the amazing community. So to put it in a nutshell if you like Mario, you will LOVE Mario maker.

This game has so much potential and initially it offers a different experience, however, when you've completed the basic game, the way to continue is by using other people's game designs, which is sadly where the game falls down. Most of the games made by other users are either pathetically easy are nearly impossible (i.e. you have to hit 7 invisible blocks in the correct order otherwise you die) and there's no satisfaction. Further more, there's no way to find a good middle ground level. You can see which ones are most popular, however, these tend to be the ones themed around OTHER games. Great idea if you and some good friends make levels for each other, but really not great.

Will be sending back, disk had a large scratch and didn’t work at all when we tested it. Very disappointing

My son has autism, and he has played this game so much, for the same reason that he loves Minecraft. He has full control over what Mario blocks, baddies and items he puts where. You can play with Super Mario World items, or NES Mario or others. He loves it and concoct ridiculous levels that no one could possibly hope to finish! It also has voice capability so doing certain things can trigger your voice giving a warning or something. You can even use a cat's paw to place items! A very clever game. My son has played it a lot, from being 5 right through to now (he is 7). I would definitely recommend it. I imagine it's pretty fun for adults too! (especially with the SNES nostalgia etc)

A gift, that has not been used much. Probably a waste of money.

Le jeu, que j'ai reçu quelque 5 semaines après l'avoir commandé, n'est finalement pas compatible dans ma région. J'ai obtenu un remboursement du vendeur sans trop de souci, mais après une longue attente décevante. Si la compatibilité avait été indiquée dans la description, je ne l'aurais évidemment pas commandé.
