I've been purchasing the banana for a number of years now - has anyone else noticed a decline in quality?

Yes totally very poor. My cat use to love them now thy come in plastic bag. No smell to them very poor won't buy again thy have gone rubbish.

can you refill ? ie is there a zip , can't see from the photo?

They are super easy to refil & sew back up even if you aren't too handy with needle & thread. The material is good quality & apart from the 'stinkies' the others we have like banana & the balls the seams weren't all that tightly sewn, meaning the material wasn't ripped with rough play, so I bought their bag of cat nip, refilled and just sewed up the original seem.

I have 2 cats and they both love the banana. After much abuse and claw play the seam will split and the catnip comes out. I tape it to prolong its life, but it never lasts more than a month or two. They never lose interest, (so I assume the smell is still strong,) and I keep buying them because it seems to be the favourite cat toy in my house. I do wish they'd reinforce the seams however.

if i order now will it stay fresh in packet till christmas or am i better ordering nearer christmas

It will stay fresh. But if your cats are anything like mine, they'll be able to smell it as soon as it's delivered and shred the packaging to get to it!!!
