Does it have chemicals that would be harmful on roasted marshmallows?

No, the main materials of the portable campfire are soy wax, Wood wool and Recycledpaper

Can you burn it indoors?

Well, you can, but it set off every smoke alarm in my house. Just saying.

do these crackle like a real campfire?

They do have somewhat of a crackle kinda like a wood wick candle does, they have a flame almost the size of a square medium sized gas fire pit. I've been very impressed with them all the way around especially the flame size and burn time.. You won't be disappointed..
