Review: Fantastic mic, love this! - I needed a good quality mic for voice overs on my YouTube channel. I had originally bought a dynamic mic, and after realising it was not the best for VO, I purchased this Condenser mic from MXL. It’s a great mic, comes with a great hard case, and shock mount. It has definitely increased the quality of my voice overs! Bear in mind it dies require phantom power, so you will need an audio interface of some kind, but it’s a really great mic for the money!
Review: Great mic - feels beautifully made. - This is a great mic for the money. Very crisp clear recordings with plenty of depth. I use it with a pop-shield which I do think is essential (not only to reduce 'pops', but also to protect the mic from moisture as condenser mics are easily damaged by moisture). The unit is well made and feels like a very solid classy piece of kit. Comes in a nice carry case too for extra protection. Very pleased with my purchase, and all the research I did before committing to the MXL 779 has paid off.

## Features

- Multipurpose condenser microphone
- Low noise FET preamp with balanced, transformer less output
- Low frequency roll-off to reduce unwanted rumble

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I've got this mic and it sounds awful. I got the 48v of phantom power. It may be my soundcard does anybody know cheap ones that work with the mic?**
A: There can be many things that make a mic sound bad. Positioning / pre amps / latency / noise floor level.

**Q: Hi will this work well with a tascam dp008ex**
A: only if there tascam has phantom power

**Q: Does this microphone require a pop filter?**
A: Hi there. This is an excellent microphone for the money and I haven't been able to fault it. However, I only really use it for 'studio' type of set-ups when recording. For vocals I always use a pop filter. I think this mic is not too bad without a pop filter but is shares a common problem with close-up vocals that 'pops' will always be a potential problem. I see this as mainly a 'studio' mic so therefore have to conclude that a pop filter is required 90% of the time. Others may have different opinions but that's my thoughts on the matter. Also, because of the type of microphone these condenser mics are extremely prone to damage from moisture (such as human breath and small amounts of saliva that might get into the mic when singing/talking close to the mic) and this alone, apart from the advantage of using a pop filter for less audio impairments, will definitely ensure that the microphone's delicate condenser system is not damaged. Hope that helps.

**Q: Hi is this good for upright piano recording? Bought a matched pair NT5 recently but they dont seems to capture full dynamic of piano.**
A: Sound is everything .You know what sound you want. Have you tried moving the mics you have around in different places one at the bass end and the other at the treble end in the piano or out side there are so many variations the room you play in also has a influence on the sound too. even the atmospherics of the room either air. cool or warm air. Anyway some mics sound better recorded close up and others capture an overall sound at a distance depending what you are after. I'm using the MXL770 to record drums at present. The most important bit is recording at 0db as you get the best signal ! Keep experimenting and use lots of different mics to see which one YOU prefer not anyone else. Hope that helps. PS the MXL770 is a nice mic to record at say 1 to 2 feet away from the sound source I think.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent home studio/home recording choice for some singers and acoustic musicians.
*by S***R on 2 February 2017*

This is an indoor/home studio recording mic and I'm really impressed with it. I have several other mics that are more expensive and several recording devices and mic audio interfaces with which to use it; including Roland, Zoom and Focusrite. All of which have 48v phantom power, which this mic needs. I've used it to record voice, acoustic guitar, whistle and with less success an Anglo concertina (really needs a compressor in processing). I mount it on any one of a number of K&M (topline) mic stands, and always use its included shock absorption mount or a K&M one I also have. I've never used the pad switch as I generally have -10db and -20db available on the mic interface - and once in the shock mount it can be a little fiddly to switch in. Although I prefer to process a raw signal I have occasionally used the low cut (high pass) filter when I've known there would be an overwhelming bass output due to the proximity effect of the placement with a very bassy instrument. I use it with both the foam hood and a K&M pop shield, mainly to protect the mic from over zealous singing and keep the singers mouth away from the mic. It stores away in a nice protective plastic injection moulded case with some kind of shaped foam insert. On both acoustic guitar and singing voice (limited range) I find it gives a very faithful representation of the source sound (at the price). As a next step to improving recordings from this mic, rather than buy a "better" more expensive condenser, I'll probably look at finding a compatible figure of eight mic to let me record in mid-side stereo mode using this MXL770 as a very strong mid. I also spend a lot of money in keeping my ears in good order and regularly tested.
