Outside of packet says cut the filter to size and insert with striped side inside. the filter is covered in dots and says print side down. which is it

The idea of the print seems to be to tell you when the filter needs changing. The image fades and/or get dirty looking and you know it is time to change it.So put it in place in a way that allows you to see any pattern when you look up at it fitted.

What or where is this Grease saturation indicator?

It goes from a pinky red colour to brown when saturated. Doesn’t last that long. I cook everyday and maybe lasts 2 months.

Is this hood reliant on a cupboard over it or can it just be free standing over my hob?

HiThis is just the filter that goes in the hood.If it's free standing then can't see why it would not fit

Should be Print up ie so you can see print when fitted.
