Hi there. Yup. The compass works well , as does all the kit in the tin. In my opinion for the price this is the best edc tin on the market. Hope this helps .

Is there space for additions?

Yes, but strictly small items. You can overpack these kits, which rather defeats the point of the exercise. Personally I would stick to adding a few matches & a striker for same, and cramming cotton wool into any odd corner.
