Well seasoned wood will just split all the way up, but if you're working with knots be prepared to finish the stringy parts by hand. **Q: What height stump works good when using the XL?** A: Less than the 15” height of the unit and up to 22” - 24”+. BUT your wood type makes a huge difference the dryer the wood and straighter the grain makes cutting many lengths easy. The greener/wetter woods and cross grain types like hickory - tougher the job. I prefer smaller logs for my fire pit and it makes it super simple and safe to reduce the size of the larger logs I have. I have terrible aim swinging a maul so this makes splitting much easier.
