Review: I actually managed to get through this book on my own, much to my surprise. A bit of Google translate helped with trickier passages. A poignant ending. Good background information on the time of Pompeii. There are some teaching cum learning materials on the book's website. Review: This isn't a Latin book, it's a history book about life in the Roman Empire, focusing only on the boring stuff. Most of what's in here is just rambling about how Roman houses were constructed and the roles of women. It's a bunch of boring reading and at the end of it you realise you haven't actually learned any Latin.

I could never get on with Latin as an undergraduate. We used the rather dry grammatical method of learning (Wheelock) and my tutor was only really interested in getting us through the exams. This course is a breath of fresh air! The reading method is so much more engaging you feel like youโre making progress page by page. There are stress markers over the long vowels which aids pronunciation. Classical Latin is a beautiful language and should be read aloud in my opinion!
