Does this charger only charge in pairs? Is it possible to charge 1 cell (at a time) with this charger?

I have owned this. The universal charger WILL charge batteries individually. There are 4 charging 'points' and you can choose to put one small battery (AA or AAA) in one point. Of course, you can also put two small batteries in each point to get the full 8-at-a-time figure. This also only applies to the small batteries. Cs and Ds are charged individually in each point, so their max is only 4 at a time total.

So: how many batteries would this charge (in total) at one-time~~?!?!?!?

The OLDER CHFC2 model could charge up to 8 AAs, 8 AAAs, and 4 Cs or Ds. You could also charge variations, say 4 AAs in two slots, and 4 AAAs in the remaining too. I am on my second of the CHFC2 model, and the spring loaded mechanisms degrade over time so that I can only charge 1 AA or AAA in some of the slots. :( It looks like the CHFC2 is no longer sold. >:( NO MORE. It only charges 4 AA or 4 AAA at a shot. It appears from the pics and description that appears that the current model has done away with the old fallible mechanism that allowed up to 8 smaller batteries to charge at once. That's too bad, as I need such when I'm charging AAA batteries for a pair under-cabinet light pucks (3 ea) that I use in my kitchen and in a bathroom cabinet.

does this charger have individual circuits for each battery, or must they be charged in pairs?

They do not have to be charged in pairs. You can charge individual AA or AAA batteries by placing in the center slot. If you want to charge more than 4 or you are charging larger batteries at the same time, you can put them in pairs on either side of the center slot.
