why would you purchase the puck outside of charging on dock?

The puck can be charged using almost any type of wireless charger. The Razer specific dock is only necessary if you don't have a wireless charger or like the magnetic feature that holds the mouse in place.

does it work with macbook alone? like do you need the software on the pc to make it work or can it work on its own?

It works on every device unless it has a USB 3.0 port
