Comfortable, Durable, and Great for Hiking
These are some of the most comfortable hiking shoes I’ve owned. They fit true to size, provide excellent support, and have great traction on a variety of surfaces. The shoes were comfortable right out of the box with very little break-in time. They feel sturdy, well-made, and are suitable for both hiking and everyday wear. After many miles of use, they continue to perform well. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a reliable hiking shoe.

Comfort and reliability at an affordable price
This shoe is comfortable and meets all of my walking/hiking needs. I just completed a trip where I hiked in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming. I wore these shoes all day for several consecutive days and I couldn't be happier with the performance. Before buying, I watched multiple videos on YouTube rating hiking shoes. The Merrill Moabs were nearly always in the top three reviewed, receiving high marks on build quality and comfort. Reviewers also rated the shoe's performance high. As a non-professional hiker, this was good enough for me. If any of the online reviewers were to ask me, and I know none will, I'd commend them for their reviews. They steered me towards these shoes, and I'm glad they did. While none of the trails I hiked were extreme, I did encounter many rocks/boulders, tree stumps, and obstacles such as fallen trees and other challenges. The Moabs met each challenge. Prior to my trip, I'd been wearing these at my cabin where I go for lengthy walks along paved and unpaved roads. Again, the Moabs met all conditions I experienced with comfort and durability. For my style of walking and hiking, I feel confident that I've purchased an affordable yet reliable shoe.I've used hiking boots for years, but I wanted a shoe that, while it doesn't provide the ankle support of a boot, was still rugged and able to serve me as I expected to be served. The Moab has thus far met all of my expectations, though I will update this review if I experience and issues. But for now, I recommend these to anyone who is a casual walker/hiker similar to me.***May 2026 update***I wrote my original review in late 2025 after I first wore these shoes. Now it is May 2026 and I'm adding a new section to my review.I love these shoes even more now than I did last fall. They have held up to winter wear and still have their original integrity. The shoes show no signs o wear even though I wore them extensively throughout this past winter. The soles show no signs of degradation, the stitching and glue have held up, and they still have that like-new comfort. Put simply, these are among the most durable shoes I've ever owned.I walk a lot and these shoes are up to the task. I highly recommend them.

Merrell Men's Moab 3 Hiking Shoes – My Trusty Companions Through the Amazon and Inca Trail!
I just got back from an unforgettable adventure in Peru— a full week hiking through the humid, muddy trails of the Amazon Rainforest, followed by four demanding days on the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. These conditions threw everything at my feet: steamy heat, constant moisture, rocky uneven terrain, steep ascents and descents, and long miles with a pack. Through it all, my Merrell Men's Moab 3 Hiking Shoes held up exceptionally well and kept me comfortable, confident, and blister-free the entire time. Right out of the box, these shoes delivered that legendary Merrell comfort everyone raves about. No painful break-in period—just plush cushioning underfoot, a supportive Kinetic Fit Advanced footbed that contours perfectly to your stride, and generous padding at the collar and tongue. They felt like they molded to my feet immediately, absorbing impact and reducing fatigue even on those long, tiring days climbing ancient stone steps or navigating root-filled rainforest paths. The Vibram TC5+ outsole provided outstanding traction on mixed terrain—wet rocks, slippery mud in the Amazon, loose gravel, and steep Inca Trail sections. I felt safe and sure-footed the whole trip, with no slips or wobbles even when things got technical. The shoes also offered great protection with reinforced toe and heel bumpers, shielding my feet from roots, rocks, and debris without feeling bulky. Durability is another huge win. Built with quality materials these shoes are "built to last" and "more durable than many lightweight alternatives." After two weeks of serious abuse in humid jungle conditions and high-altitude trails, they showed minimal wear and continued performing like new. They breathe well thanks to the mesh panels, keeping my feet cooler than expected in the Amazon heat, and dried reasonably quickly after stream crossings or rain. I especially appreciated the stable platform and arch support—perfect for carrying a daypack on multi-day treks. The wide toe box gave my toes plenty of room to splay naturally, preventing hot spots, while the overall fit felt secure without any heel slippage. They're also fantastic value—offering premium features at a price that makes them accessible for everyone from beginners to seasoned hikers. Whether you're tackling rainforest humidity, ancient stone paths to Machu Picchu, or everyday trails closer to home, the Merrell Moab 3 is an absolute winner. They're versatile, reliable, and make long miles feel effortless. I can't recommend them highly enough—these are now my go-to hiking shoes, and I'll definitely be buying another pair when the time comes. If you're looking for all-day comfort, excellent traction, and shoes that just work, look no further!Highly recommended!

Good shoes with some limitations.
These shoes are nice on dry ground, but as you can tell by the pic, they pack on the mud if the ground is wet! Nothing like carrying around an extra pound or two attached to the end of your legs! Also the only part that is waterproof, or even water resistant is the bottom inch or so where the rubber holds on the sole and covers the seam. I don't know if they are advertised as waterproof or water resistant, but in case someone wanted to know. Now the good points. My feet feel good after todays 7.62 mile hike, though it wasn't that steep. Elevation gain was roughly 1200 feet in the 7.62 miles, most of that on the way in, because the way out was largely downhill. Also they stayed tied. I did double knot them as a precaustion, but I had no issues with that at all. Recommended as excellent for the price. I did purchase them in Wide though I usually wear normal width shoes, and half a size larger than my typical size.

Best shoes I've EVER owned.
I was a New Balance guy for many years due to my very wide feet. In recent years, they've become very disappointing, falling apart even when quite new. This past Summer I was headed to Europe for a lot of hiking. After an on trail failure of New Balances the year before (brand new pair and the bottom just came right off), I knew I had to find a better solution. I had also been dealing with a lot of blisters. I decided to try these based on some youtube videos. They did not disappoint! Even after a 20 mile hike, no blisters and no foot pain. The best part is even after 150 miles of some very hard trails, they're still holding up great! I am so very impressed by these shoes and this company. I've been telling everyone I know to get a pair. As a teacher I have to be very careful how I spend my money. I have to get value for my dollar. These were very expensive for my budget. I've learned that if you're going to enjoy travel, your feet have got to be happy. These have worked for me. I'm saving up for another trip in 2027. My budget is going to include another pair of these. These shoes made a trip of a lifetime even more amazing than I could have imagined. When the school year started, I went back to the old New Balances with all the shoe goo repairs. Standing all day teaching in those was now torture. I started wearing these. They're not really dressy enough, but I got them in black, so they work ok with khaki's and a nice shirt. The last 3 weeks, I'm walking up and down the rows, ready to help my kids. I have not felt the need to sit down and rest my feet like I used to have to do.So these shoes not only helped me enjoy the vacation of a lifetime, but they're helping me help kids and be the best teacher I can be. We'll see how long it takes for them to wear out.I thought I'd add that they are the perfect amount of grip, even on the wet cobblestone streets of Europe. I never slipped once.

Merrel Men's Moab 3 Hiking Shoe Review
Takes a moment to customize / break in; nothing excessive wear a couple of times around the house and wear some other shoes and come back. They are great! I wear them in a lab with concrete floors, stand for hours with no issues, very comfortable. The shoe is lightweight and does keep feet warm in winter. Very stable after break in as mentioned. Size was perfect. The material is very durable and has been abused around the yard, I have owned the sandals and appreciate the shoes.

comfort and durability
Quality is why I keep buying Merrell footwear. The shoestrings are not as robust as the ones that were on the Moab 2, and I'm hoping that won't matter. I'm still getting use out of the Moab 2 shoes after 7 years of use and a little damage. They've withstood plenty of dog walks and kicking a soccer ball for the dog thousands of times. I'm very pleased with such durability and expect similar performance from the Moab 3.

Great Shoe!
Before I purchased this shoe on Amazon, I had been trying on different brands and styles of shoes at various stores. I knew I wanted something built with good materials that would last me several years, look good with a variety of different clothing options, and work well for a wide variety of activities including hiking, working out, walking around all day, etc., and also at a good price. I'm not a fan of spending tons of money on several different pairs of shoes tailored to each individual activity. I found a pair of these at a store and really liked how they looked and fit. My foot fits well in the size I purchased, and there is some arch support as well, but not overpowering. I've never has a pair of Merrell's before, but they're known for good quality and these shoes look and feel like good quality. They have real leather, thick tractiony soles, an agressive look, and tons of color options. I've worn them for a couple of weeks and they feel great. The best part was the price. At the store I tried them on at, they cost $120. Then I checked on Amazon and they had my size for under $60. I noticed the price was different depending on size, and possibly color, with some of them costing as much as $120. I'm not sure why this is. You might want to select different options before purchasing to see if one size or color is a better price. They are also probably a bit heavy for people that want something really light for running or working out, but for me it just makes my workout a little more challenging. It's not supposed to be easy, right? Other than that, there were a couple of other little issues I should mention. For some reason, the shoe I got looked like a lighter shade than what was pictured. Then I held the shoe up next to the picture, and they looked the same color. It may be that the pictures were taken under different lighting conditions that made them seem a bit darker, I don't know, but I've seen other reviews that say the color is different, and I thought so too until I held them right next to each other. A trick of the mind. The last issue is size, and this is the most important. I'm glad I tried them on at a store first, because I generally wear a 10-1/2, sometimes an 11. At the store I needed an 11-1/2, but they fit perfectly! I ordered an 11-1/2, and again they fit perfectly. So I would probably order one size large if you want them to fit. On a last note, I liked these so much that I ordered another pair of a different color. I felt like these were such a great shoe at such a great price, it was well worth it to have a second pair. These will probably last me a good 10 years between the two.
