As stated, this product didn't change the color or general appearance of the wood. It adds a slight grainy texture where applied, which is the anti slip mechanism. I believe it will work great. The results I got were well above my expectations. **Q: Can you mix and apply with normal water or does it need to be a clear coat type paint?** A: I mixed this with a machine gray oil base paint, and painted a concreate landing. the non slip grip mixed with the paint and turned out to be the same color has the paint. Hope this answered your question. **Q: What's the advantage to using this instead of sand?** A: The advantages over sand are: 1. Granules are small enough to completely mix with coating so as to not wear off while providing excellent grip. 2. They are completely clear. I used them mixed with a spar urethane to protect outdoor wooden steps I built. I spent many hours sanding and staining, making a beautiful set of steps I wanted to stay beautiful, but living in snow country they had to have grip. No way was I going to cover them with black or hardly transparent grip tape strips. This stuff is fantastic! Completely clear and very, very slip resistant without being hard on my dogs feet or ours.
