what are the ingredients in Zatarain's File Gumbo

the only ingredient is ground sassafrass leaves. it really does make a difference in my opion. i have made gumbo before and it was good, but using the file powder made it better. my husband really liked it. sprinkle just before serving and it can also thicken your dish.

Is it slimy like okra?

No! It is a spice. It is like powder (very finely ground). I would put it in the same consistency as paprika. It adds flavor to gumbo, but does not change how the gumbo is made. Also not all gumbo have okra in them. I cool chicken and sausage gumbo without okra.
