King Controls KD5500B Dome Relay

Its no secret, I am not a fan of King Controls. The ownership experience of the 9501 that came with my rig was in a word; dismal. Not wanting to run a new wiring harness, I tried one of their newer models, but it would never work correctly. Then I stumbled onto this antenna. They partnered with Dish on the tailgater product. This has no controls, it does not need your old wiring harness if you have one, it draw power from the the VIP 211 tuner. All this works. This thing is a full 2" taller then the old antenna, it is now higher then my A/C units; its big. The original holes in the roof lined up, so that is a plus. The VIP 211 recognized the antenna immediately on power up. It prompted me for the state; California is split into Northern and Southern which makes sense. Soon I had my full channel line up on all three birds. Operationally, it would be nice if Dish would recognize those of us who dry camp and cycle power dont need to track the satellites again on power up and it should give the option to cancel out of the scan. Then again, I think Dish should develop an RV and store all that goo in flash memory. Overall, it is a good option, but it is tall.

This unit worked for 2 days and when I finally was able to get someone at King Dome tech support they informed me that they had a lot of problems with the satellite motors going back in the early models. I ask him why they would continue to sell them if they were having that much trouble and he was not able to give me a good answer. It seems to me that it would be much easier to recall the early model unsold units and replace the motor prior to just continuing to sell a bad product.

Had to send it back to the factory for repair three times in the first year

Works great with Dish Network. Was easy to install and get to working. Probably took me a couple of hours to mount on the Motor Home and has been trouble free the three times I have had occasion to use it. Installation instructions are great and easy to follow.

Arrived on time. Easy to install. Hooked it up and it works perfectly.
