Quartered apples then pressed in the 1.6 gal stainless press by this seller. Bushel of apples only yielded 1.75 gal. Should I crush twice?** A: I had the same experience last month. In addition, cranking the handle gets tiring fast! I switched to a 10 cup food processor (HB) which turned halved and quartered apples into a liquidy pulp. I used that mash in my home made 20 ton bottle jack press and got 1 gallon per 12 pounds of apples. A bushel of apples weighs 48 pounds, so from that amount I would get 4 gallons of juice, more that twice your yield. The food processor worked well and worked quickly, turning 10 cups of apples into mash in under 30 seconds. Working alone over three days and ~3 hours/day I made about 20 gallons of juice. Many folks use a garbage disposal to make a fine mash which also gives a better yield, I might go that route in the future, but the food processor works well. On the down side, the seeds were also chopped up and the juice was very cloudy. I used it for wine making. The Nov 10th pressing was racked into glass carboys on Nov 23 and is clearing nicely. Making the 7L crusher/grinder more efficient by changing or modifying the fingers, and powering it with a drill or electric motor might improve the yield. There is a cotter pin that connects the shaft and the gear. Take a look and you'll find the hole. I fixed mine with a screw and some gorilla glue. This is our first year to make apple cider. We researched for an affordable apple crusher. Husband wanted this model because of the wheel like handle and the metal grinder part. Warning: the metal grinder comes with the model that has the stand. The ad is misleading. When we ordered the crusher WITHOUT the stand, we discovered the model came with nylon plastic grinder instead. So, be aware. Based on reviews, I resealed the box and was ready to return it. My husband, however, called the company to see if a replacement part could be ordered. Thank you, Richard for getting back to us. After explaining our disappointment with the model, he told us that it was possible to order the metal part and kindly shipped it to us at no cost. We received it just yesterday. For customer service, I would give them 5 stars. For the product itself: the hopper is stainless steel, but the grinder part is nylon plastic. All the other parts are decent quality. Use care when assembling. The directions given are visual drawings. You can find a how to video on YouTube. The screws are small, don’t over torque them. The hopper has some sharp edges. My husband smoothed them. He also built a stand for it. We took a chance and used the grinder with the plastic part. I was very nervous, because others in their reviews complained about the part breaking. So as a precaution, I cut our apples up in eighths and sometimes twelfths for large apples. We filled the hopper only half way and used care cranking the wheel. Although it took us a little longer for crushing, the crusher did work very well. It took us 3 hours to crush 85+ lbs of apples and pears for cider. Husband said it was very easy to clean with the spray hose. We have another 100+ lbs to go.
