Love the book. Easy for my five year old to listen to. Condition was listed as new; however the book was used (had writing on it in the jacket).

Accessible to Young Readers (but boring)

On the upside, I'm very pleased to find EAH books written for younger girls. I read somewhere that these Once Upon a Twist books are at at grade 4 level. This particular book might even be rated easier than that. Not only is the language quite simple, but everything about it is easy to follow. Your child won't miss any jokes or nuances. I read the book to my daughter, who is going into grade 3. She has distinct learning challenges with reading, otherwise I don't think she'd have any trouble reading it herself. I could definitely see a grade 2 kid reading this book.On the downside, the book is pretty dull. OK, really dull. My guess is the author is a technical writer at Matel who excels at communicating clearly, but is not a professional novelist, or storyteller of any sort. It's a book where almost nothing happens. Rosabella is supposed to be solving a mystery so one would expect her to find some clues, have multiple suspects... nope! For most of the book, nothing happens. She just wanders the forest and helps animals in exactly the same way she did in the last chapter, and the one before that, and the one before that... Even my devoutly EAH-loving daughter who can watch brain-numbing amateur videos on YouTube forever eventually asked if we could just skip to the end, and not because of the suspense. By that point we were so close to the end we just plowed through it but I have rarely felt so incredibly bored by a children's book.Rosabella is given a great map (never uses it) and eventually finds a footprint (it's never mentioned again). When hot on the trail of the culprit she stops for a prolonged period of time to rebuild animal houses rather than actually attempting to follow the culprit and find them. I won't give away the few mildly surprising events in the book but the mystery is "solved" when the culprit finally just wanders onto the scene. It also stood out that while big-hearted Rosabella is never really judgmental before knowing what was going on, or if there was any ill-intent, she does eventually start referring to the culprit as a "he." Really?? How did the gender stereotyping get past the editors? Not cool. It's brief, and I wouldn't make a big stink over it but it struck me as totally inappropriate and out-of-place in a series where classic fairytale character roles can be played by either gender.I don't often leave negative reviews but in this case, I just really want Matel to do so much better. For all the underemployed, talented writers in the world, couldn't they find the budget to hire more of them?? I love the world of Ever After High (especially Shannon Hale's books), and I love the characters, but alas, the fun premise and great characters were wasted here. The EAH franchise is so strong and so well loved, I think there is the potential to motivate reluctant readers to read, but the books will have to be better than this.
