James is the No. 5 red engine. He is a medium-sized engine whose six driving wheels are not as big as Gordon's but not as small as Thomas'. He has a fine scarlet coat and brass dome and thinks of himself as a Really Splendid Engine. Occasionally this leads to misguided ideas about the sort of work suitable for such a distinguished engine, invariably landing James in trouble. James is a mixed traffic engine, which means he can pull both passenger coaches and freight cars. James is based on a Hughes Class 28 superheated 2-6-0 tender engine. Bachmann carefully reproduces your favorite Thomas & Friends™ characters in N scale. All locomotives feature realistic faces, operating N scale electric drive mechanisms, highly detailed plastic body shells, all-metal wheels, and Rapido-style couplers. Review: Good model - Cosmetically simple, mechanically robust. Bachmann didn't pull any punches, this guy is built to last. Taking off the base plate reveals turned brass bearings! Review: Technicians Review - I'm impressed with the model and size at first glance. Out of the box I found 1 wheel was out of quarter by a fraction (just enough to not lock the wheels but couldn't drive smoothly), something I had only learned about a week prior to receiving James. I fixed it myself and now James runs almost as smooth as Thomas, James is a fraction faster on the same track. At a minimal crawl James stalls below 0.7V (no wagons on flat track) after adjusting, I'm guessing the forward voltage of a diode. Very tiny screws, but looks easy to maintain with the right tools.
