Usually they are pretty passive and run at the sign of humans, but we had some with an attitude. My husband got me this because the way you subdue coyotes is to make yourself large looking and make a lot of noise. This is so nice as I can carry it in my pocket or loop in on my wrist while walking my dog and feel safer. A neighbor bought them for his kids who have to walk thru the area on their way to school and he said it scared them off. I have not seen the coyotes since I got it, so cannot verify except from what my neighbors kids have said. Its easy to turn on and off, just put the strap and plug it back in.
