One is a well-behaved elderly female (Demeter), and the other is a very clever but mischievous 2-year-old (Lucy). I’ve been trying to break Lucy of a few behaviors I *really* don’t want her to continue (including scratching furniture, jumping atop my headboard to reach the chain that maneuvers the 1950s-era heating vent, biting/breaking window blinds, clawing holes in my sheets, etc.). Yelling at her and/or squirting water at her were having very little effect (unless you count teaching her to become more sneaky about misbehaving so she won’t get caught!), and I kept finding evidence indicating she was simply waiting for me to leave the house before doing things she has learned she isn’t allowed to do. Therefore, I began searching for a more reliable and effective way to discipline Lucy that won’t *harm* her in any way way, but which causes enough discomfort and/or surprise that she will stop misbehaving once she feels it. That’s why I ordered this bark controller after I noticed several other cat lovers had posted positive reviews about it.I haven’t even had it for a week, and already it is proving to be a great purchase! As soon as I press the button, Lucy *immediately* stops what she’s doing and runs several feet away; she then gingerly returns to where she was while avoiding doing what caused me to activate the device. It is working so well as a deterrent that I haven’t needed to activate it more than twice for the same prohibited behavior. Therefore, I am very pleased with this item!I think I got lucky because so far Demeter hasn’t seemed to notice it at all. Perhaps she no longer hears as well as Lucy does, although I know she *can* hear because she comes running when I call her (and quite often also when I call Lucy, LOL ... “Hey, jealousy!”). However, this most likely means this product doesn’t work on *all* cats, so keep in mind that if you decide to order this item, it’s possible you’ll want to return it ... but at least it’s very reasonably priced so you don’t need to spend a big chunk of money to try it. The fact that it apparently doesn’t work on *all* cats would probably cause this item to lose one star had I wanted it to work on both my cats, but since it works as *I* need it to, I am *not* deducting anything in my review.All you’ll need to get this “bark controller” (it’s probably more accurate to describe it as a “pet behavior modification tool”) operating right out of the box are four (4) AAA batteries.Negatives: (1) It’s difficult to attach the wrist strap to the device; I actually had to pry apart the two halves of the device from each other in order to do so - but at least I’m confident the strap will remain attached! (2) It’s a little *too* easy to inadvertently push the button and thereby activate the device, so keeping it in a pocket isn’t a good idea. In fact, I have to be careful not to unintentionally activate it while holding it in my hand. I deducted one-half star (or a total of one star altogether) for each of these issues.However, I still recommend trying this device and am giving it a four (4) star rating.Please note: I submitted this review in exchange for a second bark controller (to be sent at no cost to me). Our neighbor's dogs are always out barking at us when we are trying to enjoy our time grilling and we can barely hear each other over them barking. As soon as I heard the dog run over to the fence and start barking, I pushed the button and literally within 2 seconds the dog stopped barking. He paused for a min and barked again and when I pushed the button for a second time he stopped and ran away from the fence which never happens. I was thoroughly impressed and elated that we could finally enjoy our time outside in peace without the barking. I gave it to a co-worker to try who was also skeptical, but after I told her what happened, she was eager to try it on her pugs who won't leave the neighbor's dogs alone when they're out. She tried it as soon as she got home and they too also stopped and moved away from the fence, did their business and went back inside. Her mom's dog however was a different story. Her mom's dog is older and any loud noise in general scares it into having minute long seizures. She said when she turned around after having successfully used it on her dogs, her mom's dog was on its side, having a seizure. It lasted for a minute but then was ok. She won't be using it again since her mother's dog is always around her pugs and she doesn't want it to have another seizure, but she was impressed with what the device could do. I myself have tried it at work to see how it would do on the dogs that bark excessively and it seems to only work on dogs roughly 2yrs to 9yrs. As dogs age, just like people, their hearing changes and they can't hear at certain decibel levels. This doesn't mean that it will only work within these age ranges because each dog is different. I will say to be cautious with the sensitivity that some may have to sound as it may have an adverse affect. You can't personally hear the high pitched noise as when you push the button you can only really hear what sounds like a soft static noise coming through the little speaker, but obviously since a dog's hearing is better than a humans, they can hear the intended noise.
