The 7 port USB device  listed above is a "Self Powered" device.  It gets its power from an external connection to the power lines, usually as a small transformer plugged into a wall socket.   The "bus powered mode" is when a USB device gets its power directly from the USB port of the computer or other upstream device.    "Auto switching" means that the electronics in the self-powered device can, on loss of its external power, switch to conformance as a bus powered device.  This may mean electronically disconnecting devices plugged into its ports until the total load on the upstream USB port is no more than one unit load, or 100 milliamps.Seehttp://www.beyondlogic.org/usbnutshell/usb2.shtmlThere are three classes of USB functions,    Low-power bus powered functions    High-power bus powered functions    Self-powered functionsLow power bus powered functions draw all its power from the VBUS and cannot draw any more than one unit load. Low power bus powered functions must also be designed to work down to a VBUS voltage of 4.40V and up to a maximum voltage of 5.25V measured at the upsteam plug of the device. For many 3.3V devices, LDO regulators are mandatory.High power bus powered functions will draw all its power from the bus and cannot draw more than one unit load until it has been configured, after which it can then drain 5 unit loads (500mA Max) provided it asked for this in its descriptor. High power bus functions must be able to be detected and enumerated at a minimum 4.40V. When operating at a full unit load, a minimum VBUS of 4.75 V is specified with a maximum of 5.25V. Once again, these measurements are taken at the upstream plug.Self power functions may draw up to 1 unit load from the bus and derive the rest of it's power from an external source. Should this external source fail, it must have provisions in place to draw no more than 1 unit load from the bus. Self powered functions are easier to design to specification as there is not so much of an issue with power consumption. The 1 unit bus powered load allows the detection and enumeration of devices without mains/secondary power applied.

Question 3

Are all the ports USB 3 ports? On the side, there are 2 ports labelled "Fast", and then 5 others that are not fast. Are they not all the same speed?

If u have the one with 2 times "fast" written on the side it is the 2.0 USB hub. the 3.0 Hub has blue connectors and all the 3 at the front are fast chargers with  Flash sign next to it. The wall charger Comes as by Derek Ng as a 3A charger but 12V - 3A which gives complete 7.2 Amps total and meassured at my usb3.0 Hub it gives out 2.4A 5.2V and charges my iPad 4 without Problems. The stream-speed of the ports are all the same Speed (depending if u have USB2.0 Version i reached 430 Mbit/s at the USB 3.0 Version i reached 4200 Mbit/s but thats all my PC can manage so it might go faster if ur PC is faster) Hope i was able to help.

can you run this USB hub witout power

It has an external power source, so that will enable it to work with any external hard drive. However, if you want to know if it will work without the external power source, the answer is a conditional yes for the 3.0 dock. My external hard drive is 3.0 and so is the USB cord connecting to the dock. I can't speak for 2.0.  I wanted it to power my external hard drive connected to my TV's USB port, and power my LED strip lights mounted behnd my TV. A powered dock would have those lights on all the time, which I didn't want.
