Swanson Berberine HCl Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health Supplement for Health-Conscious Adults - Non-GMO, Vegan, Gluten-Free (60 Vegan Capsules, 400 mg Each)

This review is 10 years late. I purchased these in 2017 and took them and had all kinds of stomach issues so I stopped taking them and sat them on my desk. I’ve taken multiple types of so called Berberine pills from other brands and have been disappointed and seen no results. In fact I’m currently taking a liquid version thinking that liquid would be better quality…it hasn’t done anything my glucose has still been high. Fast forward to a video on YouTube about Berberine and the yellow root and how it can help with glucose management and then I remembered that these Swanson Berberine pills are actually the only ones that were bright yellow. So I started taking my Swanson Berberine that expired in 2025. And what do you know little by little my glucose has been getting under control, yes I cleaned up my eating slightly but not really that much. I just ordered another bottle and compared the labels and ingredients and they match (old bottle to new bottle). When I started again I had the same stomach issues, similar to when taking metformin but that seems to have subsided .

In the studies I’d looked at, Swanson was said to give you what you pay for. I believe it keeps me from an overnight insulin spike.

I chose this brand after watching a review of several brands. Swansons was one of the few brands that contained Berberine close to the amount stated. It’s been less than a week since I started taking the product and I am taking other measures to lower my blood glucose. Over the last few months I’ve been doing intermittent fasting, keto and exercise. I have lost weight and brought my sugars down some, but I could not get my sugars to go below triple digits. After about a week of taking the berberine my glucose has been in the 90s and even a few in the 80s. Needless to say, I’m pretty happy with the results. I am tracking my sugars very closely and will update this review should anything change.

Product is excellent but the vendor supplied aged contents. I received four bottles of Berberine with Best By dates of10/26. They are within the limits of freshness, but it is apparent that they have been on the shelf for quite a while. Last year I purchased the identical product and the containers had a Best By date of 03/27. This is disappointing.

Cheap price didn't mean that it was any less effective. I was taking this for observational reason. I work in the nutrition industry and thus help many people with various health needs. I went for nearly a year with some type of bacterial or viral issue that the medical approach seemed baffled over and couldn't help. So using my past knowledge of natural medicine I included Berberine as one of the tools to combat my mystery symptoms which involved terribly lung issues as well as constant fatigue and low energy. Berberine is well known for its anti-bacterial, anti-viral properties. While taking the berberine I also noticed more stable blood sugar as well as a leaning out effect, in other words my body fat levels decreased. That was proof positive that this Berberine supplement was effective as advertised since those are some of the noted benefits of Berberine. I did also however notice a significant decrease in muscle mass as well towards the end of my cycle with Berberine. I was also at the maximum dose of 3 capsules per day at that point. In my adult life I've never been that low on muscle mass so without a doubt it was the Berberine having that effect. It's been noted by researchers that most likely that muscle reducing effect of Berberine can be offset by doing resistance training to prevent the muscle atrophy from happening. It was shortly after I noticed the significant decrease in muscle mass that I discontinued using Berberine so I can't say whether doing some resistance training would prevent the loss in muscle but it seems logical that it should work. Anyhow, the point is that I clearly responded in classic fashion to this Berberine as noted by established clinical studies and thus I must conclude that this Swanson brand despite being very affordable is also very effect and performs well. Whether you are looking for the anti-viral, antibacterial effect, the weight loss effect, the blood sugar balancing effect, the liver de-fatting effect, based on what I experienced I believe this supplement is effective! Please always seek proper medical supervision when taking a supplement like this. **Oh btw, I have recovered to a great degree from the terrible state I was in. Berberine may have played a part in that recovery!**
