I want to fit this onto a platform that is only 8" wide... it appears the feet that are shown may be wider... is there an alt surface mount option?

The brackets twist and then slide into channels on the bottom, they can be positioned anywhere within that channel, tightened down with the provided set screws. The brackets are aluminum and easily modified, I cut off the mounting ears where you would bolt it down and drilled one hole centered in the middle of the bracket to use a "T" bolt into my ladder cross bar.

How do you program the light for different flash patterns?

There is a wire in the harness that allows the user to scroll through the available patterns. Every time it is powered briefly the bar moves forward 1 pattern until you find the desired flash pattern. That pattern is now locked until it is changed by the same procedure.
