## Description

"Lakshmi" is a beautiful depiction of the Hindu Goddess by the famous Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma. Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity. Lakshmi is depicted in Indian art as an elegantly dressed, prosperity-showering golden-coloured woman with an owl as her vehicle, signifying the importance of economic activity in maintenance of life. She typically stands or sits like a yogin on a lotus pedestal and holds lotus in her hand, a symbolism for fortune, self-knowledge and spiritual liberation. Her iconography shows her with four hands, which represent the four goals of human life considered important to the Hindu way of life: dharma, kama, artha, and moksha. The elephants and horses signify royalty and power, as stated in the Sri-Suktam. Raja Ravi Varma (29 April 1848–2 October 1906) was a celebrated Indian painter and artist. He is considered among the greatest painters in the history of Indian art, responsible for bringing academic realism and systematic stylization to Indian art and was notable for making affordable lithographs of his paintings available to the public, which greatly enhanced his reach and influence as a painter and public figure. This is an early lithograph done at the famous Ravi Varma Press. Its in the size 14 x 10 inches, on the subjects Hindu gods and goddesses in scenes adapted mainly from the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the Puranas. The Ravi Varma Lithographic Press was started in 1894 in Bombay, a carefully chosen location, for the expediency of importing machinery from Germany and distributing the prints. Anant Shivaji Desai was an Indian businessman from the erstwhile Sawantvadi State in British India. He established himself as a publisher in Bombay, selling prints of Raja Ravi Varma's paintings. After Varma's death in 1906 Desai acquired the rights to the Baroda and Mysore collections, publishing them until 1945, when the original Ravi Varma Press firm went out of business.
