Is there a specific wood I should use when cooking?

We recommend kiln-dried hardwoods like Oak, Hickory, Maple, and Pecan. Some wood is not safe for cooking, including softwood, plywood, construction scraps, painted or stained lumber, or any composite logs containing accelerants.

Can I cook when the fire is burning?

The fire pit cooking system works best with a shallow bed of embers in your fire pit’s burn chamber. Flames shouldn’t be higher than a few inches while cooking with the Cast Iron Griddle.

Do I need to season Cast Iron Griddle before I use it - similar to a cast iron skillet?

Yes, it should be treated just like the cast iron you’re familiar with. The non-stick quality will fully develop after 8-10 seasonings. Allowing an extra 30 minutes before cooking will be plenty of time to season your Cast Iron Griddle.

Do I need the Hub in order to use the cooktops?

Yes, Hub is an essential part of your fire pit cooking system. Cast Iron Griddle should never be placed over your fire pit without Hub.

Great products

I bought the Solo Bonfire 2.0 stove, hub, grill and griddle. They are all great and work well. The grill and griddle are heavy - about 17 pounds each - so would not want to backpack with them, but it is great for camping near the vehicle. The stove itself works fine for hotdogs and marshmallows on a stick.

Should last forever.

I like that it integrates with the solo stove. One system for fire place , cooking and barbecuing. Heavy duty, I use wood pellets for a quick fire and steady heat source.
