The stake end is inserted in the ground. The opposing end (with the smaller black clip) grasps the object you wish to hold. Use the Plamp to stabilize windblown subjects, adjust the position or angle of your subject, or move obstructing foliage. You can also use the Plamp to hold reflectors and lens shades. Got the extension and with some hot water to soften the end was able to attach it to the main clamp with some force. It does not move smoothly when you have to adjust the position of the clamp for the subject, it tends to be jerky because of the way the mechanism it put together like a bunch of ball and socket joints that are adjustable. With the extension it can be “bouncy” and not steady due to the length. It can’t hold a lot of weight, a cupple of flowers, but without the extension it would hold a lot more without sagging and “bobbing” and it would be steadier.
