Is this suitable enough to use as the actual grow medium? Would I still need the substrate (rye berry, etc)

You will need to combine this with colonized grain spawn. It will not support colonization on its own.

What would the mixing measurements for a small batch?.. Say ..only needing a lb or 2 at a time..

I read that you can make a full batch and leave it for up to 6 months before using it all, so if you're going to be growing more batches in the near future, I'd probably just make the whole thing. Otherwise, you can measure out 1/5 of each of the three ingredients. The gypsum is the hardest to measure, but nothing needs to be exact, so I wouldn't worry too much. The big thing is to start with much less water than they say, like 12-14 cups. Now, they might be telling you that so you have enough boiling water to more thoroughly pasteurize the substrate, but if you use that much, you'll have to use a colander and/or manual squeezing and draining to get rid of the excess moisture. If you don't know what "Field Capacity" means, you need to do more research!

How do I use this with a 32oz jar of colonized substrate?

Boil water.... Drop all that stuff into a bucket or large pot an stir it up, add the heated water, seal it (i used plastic wrap ....but if you have a bucket with a lid use that) let sit for hours till its cool or at leased a little warm // ....now your ready to break out the monotub etc. Youtube 'Monotub and substrate' P.s. dont use as much water as this pack says....mine had Way to much water, had to squeeze it out by hand, still to much....

Nice kit, directions have you add too much water though.

This is a great, convenient kit, the only issue is that the amount of water is WAY too much. I had to wring out the substrate prior to putting in the tub.

Great substrate mix

Mix is clean and free of contamination. Holds moisture very well. Mix is easy to make and can be use in grow bags and tubs. Can be used for different types of mushrooms. Mushroom grow really well in the mix. Can be used in different size grow bags and tubs. Mix can have extra things added like compost, ashes, straw, sawdust and others. I would buy this mix again.

Nice little kit

You receive the basic for a substrate mix . Just mix and sterilize and your on your way . Takes guessing out of the picture .

Better items are out there

Perfect for making substrate for mycology. Although I did have a contamination when using this product. Instructions were very easy and the price wasn't too bad. I just wasn't very happy with the outcome

The weight is inaccurate

After noticing that the mixture is wetter then it should be by following sufin spores directions for the product after 4 different times i decided to measure each product gypsum is sopost to be 200g but while still in the original packaging I found the weight to be 202g after package was dumped out it only weighed 195g also found that coconut coir and vermiculite where also off by about 16g each i went to sufin spores website and purchased 2 more and weighed each one and found that they are off by 8-18g each while I understand you can't have perfection every time I believe it's more off then correct while this doesn't seem like a big deal since you can alway add more coco coir to soak up the extra water it means you either need to use less water when mixing you cvg or buy extra to add witch also cost more money

Overall it is good for starters, but watch some YouTube videos just to make sure. For me the amount of water in instruction was a bit more than it needed.
