## Questions & Answers

**Q: will this bond to abs plastic?**
A: Yes, but you will need to "Flame treat" area of plastic. Flame treatment is currently the most versatile method for the pretreatment of polyolefin surfaces, such as HDPE, LDPE and UHMW plastic substrates. Flame treating consists of exposing the surface to be decorated to a suitable oxidizing flame for a period in the range 0.2 to 3.0 seconds. This treatment brings about a change to the polymer surface that makes it wettable and permits a strong adhesive bond between the molding surface and the coating. This change in surface properties can be demonstrated by immersing an untreated and flame treated piece in water and comparing the behavior of the water left on the surface. Upon removal, the water will run off in globules from the untreated piece and a continuous film or sheet will form on the treated surface which will last for a varying length of time depending on the actual flaming conditions used. **Q: Can i do a second coat/fiberglass layer within a couple/few hours ...or ... must i wait 3 days for the cure, then sand and apply 2nd coat?**
A: you can apply second layer of fiberglass immediately after applying coat of resin on first layer. Please view our video on YouTube.

**Q: What is used for thinning and/or cleanup?**
A: Hello,
The MAX BOND epoxy resin can be thinned with a small amount of acetone. Typically a 5% dilution with acetone is sufficient to thin the viscosity by half. Do not add more than 5% as this will greatly affect the cure time and other mechanical properties. Acetone is also used for general clean-ups. It is the best solvent to use as it is EPA exempt as well as its fast evaporation compared to other solvents. Acetone is also exempt VOC and is considered as a Non-Hazardous Air Polluting Substance or N-HAPS. The addition of the acetone will slow the cure rate as the acetone evaporates from the epoxy mixture upon application, it will cure to the touch in 24 hours of cure time at 75 deg Fahrenheit.

To dilute the MAX BOND with acetone by weight use the following calculations;
HOW TO CALCULATE A 5% ACETONE DILUTION WITH 100% SOLIDS EPOXY RESINS

The use of a weighing scale is highly recommended for accuracy and to minimize over dilution that will affect the cure rate and cured finish.
Determine The Weight Of The Mixed Resin And Curing Agent. = W1
Divide W1 by 95% = W2
Multiply W2  by 5% = W3

Add W3 + W1 = Mixed Epoxy 95% + Acetone 5% =
5% Acetone Diluted Epoxy/Curing Agent Mixture

W1 WEIGHT OF MIXED EPOXY, RESIN AND CURING AGENT
W2	DESIRED DILUTION FACTOR
W3	AMOUNT OF ACETONE NEEDED

For Example;
100 Grams Of Mixed Epoxy And Curing Agent / .95 = 105.3 Grams ( W1)
105.3 grams x .05 = 5.3 grams ( W2) Amount Of Acetone Needed
100 Grams ( W1) + 5.3 Grams ( W2) = 105.3 Grams Total Epoxy/Curing Agent 5% Acetone (W3)

Based on the calculations above, 100 grams of mixed resin and curing agent will require 5.3 grams of acetone to dilute the epoxy mixture to a 95% resin and 5% acetone dilution.

Thanks and hope this helps'
Gerald

**Q: Is this suitable for coating the wood I had to replace in the area of a Fish & Ski boat that is under the batteries flooring and fuel tank.**
A: Yes this is a good epoxy for a marine application. You would need to use a fiberglass fabric with this epoxy.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great stuff but be sure to mix really thoroughly
*by K***R on September 8, 2023*

Easy to use. Just mix 1:1, no metering, no pumping so many pumps to so many pumps, just add 1/2 cup of A to 1/2 cup of B and you have a cup of workable resin. Only 2 things. One, be sure to really mix A and B thoroughly. If you don't the cure time is really longer and it might not cure at all. I have had a few times where I didn't mix as thoroughly as I thought and part A or part B separately will never cure. Two, the instructions say a working time of like an hour at 75 degrees. It may be a little shorter a time than that but if it is an hour at 75 degrees its not 1/2 hour at 85 degrees, it more like 10 minutes. At 85 or so degrees or maybe higher, you'll be able to feel the stuff heat up in the cup as you are racing to apply it. Keep that in mind if you are going to mix up a lot of it for a big job on a really hot day, you better apply it fast or the cup gets too hot to hold (I was using red solo cups and it gets hot enough when curing to melt the cup) and the mix at the bottom will start to thicken and cure before you get a chance to use it. If you have a big job and its a really hot day, you're better off mixing a few small batches as you need it than a big batch or you'll just end up throwing away a bunch of partially cured epoxy that is too thick to use.

### ⭐ Not for fiberglass work
*by A***Y on March 23, 2025*

This item was described as low viscosity. It is almost useless in a brush application. It is entirely useless in a fiberglass wet out . A nap roller will not move this epoxy. Very disappointing

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great glue, filler and sealant for boatbuilding. Nice amber color.
*by S***E on July 30, 2017*

Used this epoxy for my first homemade boat project. Excellent stuff. Easy to work with and a nice amber color when dry. Dried to the touch within an hour or so depending on direct sunlight and temperature. Completely dry, hard as rock within a few days. Worked great as a glue (thickened with silica) as a filler (with silica and/or wood flour) and as a sealant.
