If I just hold up the cloth will it still filter air as the air flows, if I don’t buy the machine?

No, this is not how filters work. Air must be forced through a very fine media otherwise it would take the path of least resistance and simply move around the filter. Also this is not a filter, It is a prefilter that absorbs odors.

What are the fibers made of?

They are a soft plastic foam similar to what you find on a window airconditioning unit

Does this contain fiber glass? Would this be ideal for the insert of a diy n95 mask?

What you could do is add it to the inside of an existing N95 mask to help protect against OV. Activated charcoal is used to filter organic and inorganic vapors.
