This is a simple guidebook for people who are interested in learning the introduction of how an Abacus works. The book includes simple explanation of the theory of abacus, how to read an abacus, and how to use an abacus to do simple calculation. The book includes a rule sheet for those who is interested in depth learning. At its simplest, abacus is a language that will translate numbers into beads. It will train your brain muscles to better focus, enhance your memory and become more observational. Learning to read numbers on an abacus really does open up a whole new world to explore. Review: For a beginner informative - I like this book for the fact that I am trying to learn the abacus on my own for the first time Review: Basic Abacus- Excellent - Basics to teach a kinder to 2nd grader was easy with this. I did not expect it to go to higher levels. I wish this author had books to address subtraction rules, multiplication and division.

VERY OVERPRICED AND WORTHLESS BOOK!!! [In other words, it's a gyp!]
I agree with aba aba. This book is worthless compared to even the simplest of similar on -line material. Exorbitant price to learn to enter numbers from 0 to 100 and worse than that the organization of the answers to the simple questions requires user to write down manually a table correlating specific test answer with corresponding test numbers and those have to be learned by counting number of tests to that particular one. In addition, the identification as to which is an example and which is a test with corresponding answer is ambiguous.

Needs Multipication and Division too
Interesting short book for learning addition and subtraction using a Japanese Abacus with an abundance of exersizes for learning fingering. However, it would be nice to have some instructions and examples for doing multipliation and divison. Also, maybe taking a square root. THe Japanese Mathametition, Dr. O no also used the Abacus to study mathamatical geometry which requires placing an equation on an Abacus for evaluation. It would be nice to at least have references to these advanced techniuqes.

Best as a reference after a tutorial video.
There are some illustrations missing from the book. Some grammatical errors. I did not notice a big focus on form and form is important if you plan to springboard into mental math. I think this book would be okay for someone who has already seen a couple of tutorials on youtube or something, but it won't be super helpful as the very first thing you pick up for learning Abacus/Soroban.

This instruction book was produced on too small a budget, so it's not worth buying
The text referred to color in the diagrams, but the book was printed in gray-scale. The instructions are for only one kind of abacus. Whole illustrations are missing, even though the text is formatted for them. The author might be a proficient abacus teacher, but he should never have tried publishing a book on the subject. Save yourself some money on this one.
