How far from the edge of the metal can you punch the hole?

There are two different versions of this tool. One with a 3/16" hole punch and one with a 5/16" hole punch. I have both so can give you the answer for both. The unit with the 3/16" hole punch makes a hole 1/8" from the edge. The unit with the 5/16" hole punch makes a hole 1/16" from the edge. I hope that this helps. I am very satisfied with my tools.

Any way to modify the throat depth on the punch side? It's too shallow for my liking.

Nope, you have what you get. They are set up for a specific meatal thickness and if you try to use heaver material it will bend the shaft and ruin the tool. I tried it and had to buy a new one.

Can the punch be flipped to be positioned at the end of the tool?

Not sure if you meen at a 90 degree angle, but no. One side crimps and the other punches holes

How many gallon compressor is recommended?

It will run off just about any compressor. If you are going to be doing a lot of crimping on long panels, you might want something with a larger tank, but it will run off a pancake compressor. I have a 30 gallon tank on my home shop compressor, and, on the small patch panels I've used it on, it never got to the point where the compressor kicked in.
