Is this stand stable enough to use without screwing it to a table?

Not at all. It is sturdy once you screw it down.

Can you use a case with this stand? We have a larger Otterbox on the tablet and would like to keep it on there while on the stand.

Not sure. It depends on the size of the Otter Box. There is some room, but we only put in the bare iPad. Some Otter Boxes I have seen, like the ones they use at school might not fit. The clamps protect the iPad reasonably well. We did not feel there was a need for more protection.

is there any compatible keyboard mount anyone recommend?

We currently do not offer a keyboard tray that is compatible with ‎MI-3786.

Does it block the sound coming out of the iPad?

We don’t use the sound for our use, but I think it would work fine.
