Installed easily by homeowner
We bought this particular item on the recommendation of our plumber who installed a tankless water heater. This will allow for hot water even in a power outage. We self installed the unit, not difficult. One important thing is that the outlet that you plug in your tankless into the unit is not easily visible, it's located up under the top area in the panel opening (unscrew the panel as directed and then feel up under that space). All other directions went as described in the manual. Took about 19 minutes to install. We placed ours on a rubber stool to keep it off the floor.

Spontaneously rebooting after a few weeks of service... manufacturer totally unresponsive...
I connected this to a new Navien NPE-240A2. For a few weeks it worked great and then suddenly the Hugo it started spontaneously and repeatedly rebooting which of course caused the Navien to also repeatedly reboot. Even worse I have tried everything to contact Safeguard Power Solutions - I called them (left voicemails), emailed them, submitted their webform. They are totally unresponsive - its as if there is no one alive at that company. On paper this is a great solution. Easy to install and just solves the problem. But in practice is is a pile of garbage. It is entirely possible there is a work around to what I am experiencing (at worst I have a defective unit) but I have no way to diagnose if they aren't available to contact. Note that I have carefully read their manual (and on device notices) and scoured their website - there is no mention of what I am seeing. I tried to make this work but SPS has left me hanging. If you try buying one of these just be sure to monitor it carefully for the first 30-days so you can return it via Amazon if it goes belly up as mine has apparently done. Not good. Hopefully another manufacturer will ship a comparable product to use in the future - one that actually works and has someone available to help troubleshoot if there are issues.

Easy to mount and works just as I need it ...
Works just as advertised. Had a little trouble with the flow sensor. One side was 3/4 NPT thread and the other is GHT thread. But one quick call to Hugo and they let me know exit is 3/4" NPT and the intake side is 3/4" Garden Hose thread. I just had to use an adapter to convert it back to NPT and then to a 3/4 PEX fitting. But everything else was spot on. Easy to mount and works just as I need it too. Their customer service really wants to help you and stands behind this. I was impressed with how thick the metal outside housing is and how well the inside guts are put together. The last ice storm got me thinking if our power goes out and it is 32 deg F or below the tankless hot water tank will freeze and bust inside. Yeah and I would be out a bit of money with the Navien unit I have (NPE-S 210 series). Great price for some peace of mind. Also with Irma I realized with 5 days of no power cold showers got old really quick.

Solid product, works as advertised
Great unit, works well with my tankless water heater. I got the larger battery and flow sensor option. I only give it 4 stars because the controller board has some issues which is going to require me to ship it back to the manufacturer for repair/replacement. Unfortunate.

DO NOT BUY THIS!
I purchased the Hugo battery backup for my tankless water heater. I had the version with the flow valve. (1) After getting the help of a plumber, we could not get the flow valve to work. It was installed exactly per the device's instructions. We were, however, able to get it working in UPS mode. Not ideal, but still a backup. This ran for about 5 months. (2) In June 2025 (I purchased it in Dec 2024), the unit started clicking, beeping, and turning on and off. This kept turning the water heater on and off. We disconnected the Hugo, plugged the water heater into the wall, and it worked again. Now this is my big issue - I tried contacting the manufacturer. The unit has a 3-year warranty, and I was trying to get help under it. They ghosted me for 3 months. After numerous calls and emails, I finally reached out to Amazon. Amazon attempted to contact the seller and was also ignored. They finally processed a refund under the Amazon guarantee. About a week after this, I finally did hear from the seller/manufacturer. Not to offer help, but they wanted the unit shipped back to them. While this was not required, I wanted to get rid of the item, and they sent me a label, which I then used to return it, boxing and packing at my own expense. This is some of the WORST customer service I have had on anything in a long time. I switched to an EcoFlow solution, which is smaller, cheaper, and actually works as promised. SHAME ON HUGO!

Great build quality. You get what you pay for. No regrets.
Spent considerable time reviewing battery back up options for my Rinnai tankless water heater. While I probably could've survived with some cheaper computer battery back up solutions, this product was the only one specifically designed for tankless hot water systems. Shipping: Heavy duty well padded packing material. Arrived on time. Impressions: This is a quality built product. A quick tour around the inside showed powder coated metal, welded seams, heavy gaskets, and attention to detail. Even the hinge pins and lock on the main door were impressive. Nothing flimsy or short cuts taken in manufacturing. Set up: Well written instruction manual. Easy to follow. Mounting options clear. Use: So far, so good. Simulated a power outage and the system took over flawlessly. Others have complained about the alarm beeping. However it silences after 5 minutes. While annoying, that's what it's supposed to do letting you know there's a problem.

Outstanding Product, Company, CEO/Owner
The HUGO BBU is ostensibly for power backup in the event of an electrical power outage. But I also wanted it because it has active circuitry protecting the expensive Rinnai water heater against power brownouts, surges, and spikes which occur far more frequently. Installation was easy. Even tho there was some inadvertent shipping damage, the company (and even the CEO) has bent over backwards to make it right for us, and to ensure that the same problem will not occur again for others. Quality product, quality company, and quality CEO. Would that all companies had the integrity of SafeGuard. BOTTOM LINE: Inexpensive, reliable insurance to say the least. Very pleased with the product and the company.

Not worth the price
This is a very costly UPS and I would not waste money on it. Customer service does not return calls. I have had this unit for five years and need to replace the battery. It does not work with a battery off the shelf as indicated in the User Manual on page 11. This unit is a total waste of money!! I question if this is a legitimate company, no one ever answers the phone or returns a message.
