They have a feast and eat the seeds . Sadly the description and the box itself says noting about chipmunks and raccoons. It is only when you start reading the brochure inside the box that the manufacturer states categorically that the feeder is not designed to deter them. Again hiding the truth from the customer. **Q: How much seed does this feeder hold?** A: Not very much actually. I have to fill it daily but it is great for the nuthatches who prefer to feed upsidedown. They can easily cling to it and the squirrels never give it a moments thought. I have the larger Brome with a cardinal ring which holds lots of seed (several days worth at a time) and that is also great, but the nuthatches can't feed as easily on it. We bought the Mini for that reason. **Q: Would this feeder work well for feeding thistle seed?** A: No, because it has drainage holes in the bottom that are large enough for thistle seeds or millet to fall out. However, I covered it with foil and poked smaller holes with a toothpick. Hoping that works. **Q: Has anyone tried using a soft, flowing peanut butter like Smucker's in this feeder?** A: These feeders are designed to feed SEED, not peanut butter. I think it would only create a miserable mess that would spoil and be very hard to clean out of the feeder. I would NOT recommend you put peanut butter in this feeder.
