It isn't too dark, isn't too bright. I can easily distinguish who is outside through a window and peephole at night with the light on. With the length of the cord, was able to put the solar panel on the roof a good 10 ft up. And the first night of use, it lasted from 5 pm to about 7 am. A full night, which was surprising.Edit 12/12 The last few days have been overcast throughout most of the day. The light lasted from about 5 pm to around 11 pm.Edit 1-24-2018 Had these for a bit over a year now. It still works great. In the Winter, it lasts till about 11. In the Summer, it stays on all night long. I have shining on our main entranceway, which has a little roof overhang on it. Initially got probably five hours of light out of the unit but now only about two hours of light after dusk. I bought one unit to sort of test it out trying to decide whether to buy a number of them to use around the property. I have relocated to a number of spots to try to maximize the exposure to the sun. We are getting into the winter months... the days are a bit shorter, and to be specific the unit gets five hours of full sun and partial sun the rest of the day... some of the winter days are gray. I'm not giving up, I love the idea of using this type of product and I'm going to keep experimenting with this one. It is easy to set up. When allowed to sit in bright sunshine for a full day, all I can say is it was still on when I went to bed. But late December in Maryland means shortened daylight hours and many cloudy days. Many times, when I got home from work, the light was not on. I'm not sure how long it came on for, if at all. I moved my nativity display to an area beneath a tree filled with Christmas lights so that it could be seen even when the solar light was off.So if you live in the sunny south where it doesn't get dark at 4:00 in the afternoon and you don't get much rain or snow, this might work for you. It probably does okay in the summer.
