Why do brakes need to be replaced in the first place?

Friction material on the brake pad contacts the rotors to slow the vehicle. In time, that material wears away and the pads must be replaced. Sometimes the rotors and calipers must also be replaced.

What are the signs of a bad brake caliper?

Symptoms can include pulling to one side when braking or a soft/spongy feel in the brake pedal. A stuck caliper piston can also create “dragging,” with the pads continuing to rub on the rotor.

Very possibly. A failed seal or other issue with the caliper can result in a brake fluid leak. There are other reasons brake fluid may be leaking, including a damaged brake hose. The leak should be inspected immediately.

If the brakes are very worn or the rotors have uneven wear, there can be a significant vibration or shaking in the steering wheel when braking. This could be the result of a sticking caliper that is causing excessive and/or uneven brake wear.
