He has one of the little tiny micro drones, but it seems to have only two speeds: hovering nicely and smashing into walls. He is proud that he can get it to hover around the house, but it is a little bit touchy to fly. At about 12 inches across, this quadcopter is a decent size for flying outdoors, but has blade protectors so that it is pretty safe to fly indoors. The best part is that it is too big to land behind bookcases.One of the reasons that I chose this quadcopter is that it came with a great collection of spare parts and extras. For starters, it comes with three battery packs. We get a decent amount of flying time with each one, but it’s always so sad when the battery is drained. The fun’s over. With three of them, the fun doesn’t have to end just because one battery pack is dead. To make using all of the batteries easier, the quadcopter comes with a charger that can charge up to four batteries at once. An LED on each charging port shows the charging status. The charger plugs into a standard USB port, and it is important to have a high power charger or port if you want all of the batteries to charge quickly.Included with this quadcopter are additional spare parts. It has four full sets of replacement blades. In addition to a set of white blades that come installed, it comes with four sets of blades in red, blue, white, and black. It also comes with a spare set of blade guards and a spare set of landing gear. Pretty much anything that is likely to break has a replacement.One of the features that make this quadcopter a lot of fun is that it has a camera. The trim button on the transmitter switches between taking still frames and shooting video. A light shows which mode that the camera is in. The camera records to a microSD card that installs in a slot in the back of the camera. To view the video, I have to move the microSd card to a computer to read it.One thing to be careful of when recording is to be sure that you stop recording before powering down the quadcopter. It’s possible for the recording to be corrupted if you skip this step. The quadcopter does not have a transmitter on the camera, so you can’t watch while flying. The controller is a standard configuration, two joystick controller, and it has an informative LCD panel. While it has a button that lets the quadcopter do stunts, we’ve been working on controlling it smoothly for great video shots. I’m really pleased with the results so far.For what it’s worth, I don’t believe you should ever have to justify getting a toy. But, if you do, this drone works great for inspecting roof shingles. We’ve done it at our house and my parent’s house. It worked really well for both!
