Because of the love-it or hate-it reviews that I found for this Honbay 5mm LED bezel I wasn't sure what to think, so I decided to try a package for myself. I am very much involved in 12-volt projects right now, from wiring lightbars on the cars to parking assist indicators in the garage bays. The 9-LED project panel shown in the pictures will warn people, "Hey, this is a wall here!", or maybe not. I started off my measuring the bezel and found the narrow panel opening spot to be 6mm. The idea is you insert a 5mm LED (10-cents each on Amazon), let it click into place and then feed it through the panel. But in this case it's a "Well, not exactly", and I think that is what is tripping people up. I took my time preparing the box because I didn't want it to be a prototype that hits the recycle bin. I actually wanted to invest the time to get it correct and use it. So I drafted a template using a free tool and printed it on my printer and then taped it to my very very inexpensive plastic project box. The box measured about 64mmx37mm and the size of this bezel was really ideal for the combination of small LED and small project box. I didn't have the proper 6mm drill bit, so I looked into non-standard alternatives and found the 15/64" bit was 0.002 "off" and I thought I'd give it a try. After using a Dremel to start the (sometimes) centered holes, I used the drill bit to open the holes up to the size of the bezel. This went much better than I expected. Maybe I didn't need to order those 6mm bits after all. After cleaning up the plastic debris from the drilling, I was ready to try the bezel. First, I attempted to insert the LED into the bezel and the "loaded" bezel into the hole. That was a non-starter and I could tell I was going to break off the plastic tabs. So, then I inserted an empty bezel into the hole and inserted the LED from behind. When I hoped to hear a click of the LED seating into a recess, I heard nothing. And my initial insert fell out when I pressed on the LED. This cost the rating one star. I eventually pressed the LED in harder with a trade-show giveaway screwdriver and it seems to hold better, but I am not going to close up the box without hitting the LEDs with a glue gun to hold them in place. All-in-all I'd say these aren't five-stars because of the lack of snap-in-place securing of the LED, but I think there is a process issue with the 1-star ratings, or they are using something other than a 6mm hole and a 5mm LED. Well, I have eight more LED's to wire, so that's all for now. If I discover a better way to accomplish this, I'll update this later.
