It helps you zone in on a specific section so you can localize a color and or shape. (i guess that is 5.08 X 5.08 cm.) i ASSUME the other Answer is referring to "Proportions" that you can create with the sliding mechanism. The Sliding internal plastic rectangle slides into the Square creating any proportion you desire. For example if you were going to be painting on a canvas that is 2 ft x 2 ft, then you could transpose the 2x2 inch square easily to a 2x2' canvas. if you were to paint on a 2 foot x 1 foot sized canvas, you would slide the sliding internal rectangle to make the internal window, instead of its widest 2"x2" to 2" x 1" (sliding the secondary rectangle of plastic into the "window"), etc. etc. This is for looking THROUGH (to answer someone else's question) at, for example a landscape you are viewing out doors, and "compose" by looking through the window adjusted to the appropriate proportions, e.g. 2x2 (a square or 2 x 1 a long rectangle). Then as you paint or draw onto your canvas or paper you view your actual landscape before you (the great outdoors, or it could be a still life of a bowl of flowers on a table), by remembering where the rectangle points fall when you choose your composition. E.g., you might pick a particular tree top intersecting with a mountain peak as your upper right corner, a rock on the ground as lower right, the top acr of a notable, e.g., very round tree on hills upper left, and a spot of brush lower left... everytime you hold up your "window" to look through you align those points, and then in laying out the same on your canvas you try to lay out in relationship to what rectangle or square portion of nature, you are capturing in your window. (lots of words, easier to show, than explain.... probably there are LOTS of youtube free tutorials and explanations on this). **Q: Is this made of plastic? If so, is it somewhat pliable, or brittle (and breakable)?** A: Measures 3½" x 3½" and is constructed of durable plastic to provide years of use.
