Well-made, exactly what I need for drafting patterns
I like the size, scale and curve of this ruler. It's metal, well-made, and works so perfectly well for drafting patterns for clothing. I have used it a few times now and am very pleased with this. I had originally ordered a see-through plastic curved french ruler, but it was too short and very cheaply made. I thought it was going to be a problem using a non-see-through metal ruler, however, so far it is not a problem at all. The length of this ruler is perfect - about 23" long as the crow flies (it has markings for 24 inches, but that's on a curve).

Solid Fairgate hip ruler
Hey, it's a hip ruler, so I assuming the inch markings are correct. :) The metal is sturdy and has only a little flex.

Very durable
Glad I got one of the last ones I could find... Anywhere. It's metal so it's durable, the measurements are attached in with a bit of coloring in the etching. I like that because it permanent vs. plastic which is not as durable and the etching is very slight. Anyway, it great for bigger projects as well.

It works just the way you might imagine such a tool would work. It was packaged well, and arrived promptly.

I'm finding it to be very good for more subtle curves like waists
I bought this after stepping on (and breaking) my plastic curve. I'm new to pattern drafting and didn't realize that this would have a different curve to it; I'm finding it to be very good for more subtle curves like waists. It has a nice feel to it and is serving its function.

I enjoyed the first couple in the Sean Duffy series but ...
I've read almost all of Adrian's books. I'm a big fan of his earlier works. I enjoyed the first couple in the Sean Duffy series but now I feel like it's played out and repeating itself. An example of the repetition is this book has another "locked room" mystery, which was part of the plot for a previous Sean Duffy novel. For me how the "locked room" mystery is resolved just wasn't interesting and the parts of the book where Sean discusses whether or not it's even possible for him to have another locked room mystery are tedious The premise of this series is the difficulties faced by a Catholic working in the predominantly Protestant Royal Ulster Constabulary during the height of the Northern Ireland Conflict. The first two books did a great job showing us the high wire act Sean had to perform so he could do his job amidst tensions from all sides in the conflict. But in this latest Sean Duffy novel had I not read the previous books I would hardly have known that Sean was Catholic. The tension and the threats of violence against him from all sides in the conflict are absent. That constant tension and the struggles of a basically good person trying to do a very difficult job in a time and place of extremists made the character and plot interesting. But this most recent book puts all that in very distant background--like department store music, it's there but you don't notice the songs and it has no impact on what you do in the store. Finally the book has two endings and I didn't like either one - not how the crime is resolved and the criminals brought to justice and not how Sean ends up.
